Victim left prison two weeks before

Relatives of a Dorchester man gunned down inside a Chinese restaurant said the teenager led a troubled life until the end, walking out of prison two weeks ago into a hail of bullets Monday night.
“He was trying to straighten himself out but he didn’t have but two weeks to do it. I guess they weren’t going to try to let him,” said 82-year-old Ulysess Utley, whose great-nephew Darrion Carrington, 18, was shot to death Monday night.
Carrington was waiting for a food order in the lobby of Canton House on Dorchester Avenue at about 11:40 p.m. when a gunman burst in and shot him multiple times before fleeing on foot, police said.
“He was always a troubled kid,” Utley said, but added that jail gave the teen a chance to break out of street life and that he was had been looking for work.
Days before his release, his mother told neighbors in their St. Mark’s Road apartment building how “very excited” she was at her son’s homecoming.
“She told my mum that her son was coming back. She was very excited. I think she said he was coming home for Christmas and he had been at school some place,” said Xheni Papargjir, 20, an upstairs neighbor in the triple-decker.Carrington’s mother was not home yesterday.
In November 2006, Carrington pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a firearm and was sentenced to 18 months in the Suffolk House of Correction.
The brutal murder happened less than a block from Carrington’s home and across the street from St. Mark’s Catholic Church on Dorchester Avenue.
“We are a very close-knit community and for something like this to happen, apart from being so sad, is unthinkable,” said Judy Greeley, parish secretary at the church.
Police said detectives are continuing the hunt for Carrington’s killer and are examining ballistics evidence.
“We don’t believe this was a random incident,” said Boston police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll.
Canton House was open for business yesterday evening with no obvious signs of Monday’s terrifying attack inside. The owner declined to comment.
It is the second murder of the year, coming days after 23-year-old Joseph N. Clarke was shot in the head in Dorchester.
Anyone with information about the murder can call detectives at 617-343-4470. Those wishing to remain anonymous may can call the Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-800-494-TIPS (8477) or text the word “TIP” to CRIME (27463).

Dot man held in fatal shooting

A district court judge yesterday ordered a 23-year-old Dorchester man held without bail in connection with a wild shootout that resulted in the city’s first homicide of the year.
Rayon Gillespie is accused of shooting Joseph Clarke on Jan. 6 near the intersection of Bowdoin and Norton streets.
Assistant District Attorney Mark Hallal told the court that Gillespie had been invited to a baby shower at 58 Norton St. the night before. Also invited, Hallal said, was his child’s mother, who had begun a romantic relationship with Clarke.
At about 1:45 a.m. Sunday, Hallal said, Clarke arrived at the Norton Street home and asked his girlfriend for a ride. The couple began walking toward Bowdoin Street, the prosecutor said, with Gillespie following.
An altercation ensued in which Clarke is believed to have said, “I didn’t come here for trouble.”
They exchanged gunfire, Hallal said, and Clarke was shot in the head.
Dorchester District Court Judge Kenneth V. Desmond ordered Gillespie to return to court on Feb. 13.
