I was looking into buying myself a pair of good handcuffs for training and general patrol use, but I'm not sure which models are reputable. Any recommendations would help. Thanks!

S&W, Hiatt, Peerless

Posted by: Badge 17

Just my personal preference:

I carry 2 sets always...1 pair of S&W Hinged (Which I have found to be smaller and work well on females or juveniles with small wrists) and one pair of hinged Peerless...

Posted by: LawMan3

and what's with the push pin double locking system? I've been looking at a few that have that feature. i.e. the S&W 100P...is that a good model?

I carry two pairs

peerless chain cuffs and a pair of peerless hinged cuffs. I prefer the location of the double lock mechanism on peerless. I think its just a preference what you prefer to use and what you are proficient with.

I carry two pair of ASP cuffs (chain and hinged). They are super light and have worked great so far.

Posted by: secret squirrel

i like peerless. the double lock mechanism i think is easier to use than the smith&wesson cuffs. i would beware of the ASP cuffs. someone i work with got into a scuffle with a dirtbag and had trouble with the cuffs. when he was trying to get him cuffed, part of the cuff twisted just enough to put them out of line and not cycle properly. They are nice and light but do feel a little flimsy...

Peerless model 301 hinged or chained I like both or maybe model 801 both are good models.

Posted by: pahapoika

peerless with chain seems to be the most popular inside. can double lock with a pen if so inclined. leg irons are also nice for extra frisky passengers on court trips and hospital watch

Posted by: SPINMASS

I carry a pair of peerless hinge and a pair of peerless chain. The chain are good for smaller wrists. I have a pair of the ASP chain that have given me issues. They twist, and the single strand will go right past the double strand. I have yet to have that happen with standard handcuffs.

Based on the info I received from you guys, i went and picked up a pair of peerless 700 chain cuffs...i like the push-pin double lock feature, it makes it simple.

Thanks for all the recommendations!

Posted by: badgebunny

I can't remember the brand names on mine (not with them right now...lol), but I carry four sets of cuffs-two on me always and two in my cruisers bag.

Oh, I thought this was about sex.

I like the back loading feature of Hiatt's.

I Carry Three Pairs Of Cuffs. Two Peerless Hinges And One S&w. The Hinges Are The Best Cuffs For Pain Compliances!!!

I have a few pair of Peerless, one pair of S&W. Those and every other brand have one thing in common.....They all go on the same way.

I'd like to carry 2 sets on me, but I have to gain about 15 pounds. If you want to get your chops busted endlessley, you can always go buy a pair of the flourescent pink ASP models =)

I'd stay away from Hiatt's. This is going back awhile, but when I was on Active Duty in the Marines, we had Hiatt's hinged cuffs and the locking mechinism would loosen up over time and they would pull through. It happened once at a very unfortunite time. We ended up dumping them for Peerless. I personally carry 1 pair of Peerless hinged and 1 pair of Smith chains. I keep a half dozen of assorted in the car with about 20 flex cuffs. Pardom my spelling it is 0515 am and I am stuck with duty tonite!

Chains for the "good" bad guys, hinges for the "uncoopertive" types.

Why don't you just purchase a double cuff case? If your belt is really loaded and you don't want to purchase a double cuff case, you can always snap a pair of cuffs on to one of your belt keepers.

I carry the ASP hinged cuffs. I found they go on easier and give you more control over the SB you are trying to cuff mid-fight. I started out with the chain ASP but discovered they were clumsy and awkward. I use the chain ASP as back-up. I am partial to ASP because they are lightweight and fairly durable. No cuff is perfect....When I was with the DOC I saw Cons get out of Peerles and Smith and Wesson cuffs using plastic utensils.

No such thing as a "good" bad guy....treat all accordingly

Posted by: JMB1977

How are those ASP cuffs? I carry 2 sets of peerless.

Posted by: Delta784

You should always carry at least two pairs of cuffs; one hinged and one chain. I carry Peerless because I prefer the double-locking system, but that's personal preference. Kind of like a Ford vs. Chevy thing.

Posted by: LA Copper

Smith & Wesson, chain for me. I find the teeth in the cuff more flexible than the Peerless. We aren't allowed to use hinged cuffs.

And I agree with Delta, always carry two sets of cuffs on your person. Bad guys come quite often come in pairs.

I put Good in quotes for a reason. A housewife with a Chpt 90 warrant might get the chains. However, most others get the hinges. I find hinges makes it easier to keep control of someone if they decide not to go with the program. Hinges also help prevent people from maneuvering around the backseat.

Also, remember, palms out.

peerless 700 chain cuffs

Posted by: ninety_four_c

I like peerless

Posted by: kttref

I was issued peerless at work...and I've gone through two sets already. The locking mechanism (even when double locked) don't always work...so set number three, hopefully this one will last longer.

Posted by: kojack1

I had a set of peerless hinge cuffs and the locking mechanism broke as well, took us a while but we finally got them off. Little embarrassing if we were to call the FD to cut them off with the big red key.

Posted by: LawMan3

i love that big red key! always works!

You might want to check the peerless cuffs. The 700 series is under recall because of a problem with the double locking system. Check their website for more info. Good news is that peerless is repairing them quickly and without charge.

Posted by: Opie

I carry one pair of S&W hinged and one pair of ASP. I too like the hinge for the control advantage. Juvies and females get the Smith's and guys and uncoop's get the ASPs. As far as the single / double strand issues with the ASPs, I believe they took care of that issue with the 2nd generation cuffs.

Hmmm......furlined or steel?

If you take the seriel # of your cuffs, punch it into their website, it will tell you if yours are covered. Mine were, same issue as others with the locking mechanism. They will send you a UPS return label via email etc.
