Corrections turn in the barrel from the Globe

A prison system strains,
and inmates die of suicide

Last year alone, seven inmates killed themselves, and another's attempt left him brain dead; four have taken their lives so far this year. Department of Correction officials say the suicides are random and unrelated. But a Globe Spotlight Team investigation of the deaths and detailed reconstruction of how they occurred found that they were far from random. (Boston Globe)

Do they actually think good people give a shit that these assholes killed themselves. Good, less $$ to spend on them.

Ya!
Imagine that. People in prison get depressed and manic and commit suicide. Maybe some of it was guilt, or perhaps no sense of hope looking at a looooooonnnnng sentence. Well I'm willing to bet if someone crunches the numbers, they'll find the suicide rate is comparable to or less than those person free in the community. BTW...who cares?

Notice how there was very little mention of the crimes that these convicts committed. No quotes from the families of the victims of their crimes. If I read one of the convicts had 8 boxes full of stuff. They killed themselves because they couldnt do the time or take the punishment for their bad behavior while incarcerated. Just another piece trying to blame the hardworking employees at the DOC who do their jobs. Shouldnt the responsibility fall on the person that committed the act? Someone made a good point if you do the math on the number of convict suicides by the population of the prison system in the commonwealth. I think the states doing a pretty good job.

Andrew Armstrong wrote with soap on the mirror and wall of his cell.

"Love, peace and dead police! May I rest in piece or get a tan in Hell at least." He also wrote, "Dust in the wind."

A real tear jerker of a story.

This is a lenghy article...however interesting about how Massachusetts inmates suicides are roughly triple the national rate for state prisons.

Locked up for stealing sneakers and violating probation, Aranda was deeply depressed. His mind was ravaged by crystal meth and other drugs his mother had begged him to quit. He'd been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and he was hearing voices.

But he told prison doctors he didn't want to die, and they believed him. Then they forgot about him.

No one from the prison clinical staff checked on him for 10 days. When a doctor finally did show up again, Aranda said he felt hopeless, and couldn't sleep. But the next day, he was allowed to walk into a shower, unattended, for 17 minutes. He had a set of shoelaces with him.

When an officer found him hanging from the shower door and sounded the "Code 99" alert last March, Aranda became the next in a series of 15 suicides in Massachusetts state prisons since early 2005. The deaths were coming at an alarming pace, roughly triple the rate in other states.

Last year alone, seven inmates killed themselves, and another's attempt left him brain dead; four have taken their lives so far this year.

Prisons are the new mental hospitals. However, hopefully the prisoner got to see a court shrink, before they stood trial to determine competency.

Also, why do kids in the custody of DYS end up in private psych hospitals? We have seen some pretty tough DYS kids, some convicted of ADW.

Let them all kill themselves........ It's the same thing they are doing on the street just by different means......

Posted by: andy0921

I reckon these assholes won't be repeat offenders....

Posted by: Killjoy

Prison suicides being a problem? I think prison suicide is a creative solution. The DOC should offer rope and instructions at the prison canteen.

Posted by: BartA1

high inmate death rate equals low repeat offender rate

Killjoy,

I agree with you Like that scene in escape from LA rather than going to the island you could select death.

I think the media has been kicking the cops in the nuts over details and quinn now it is the guys from the DOC who they are gonna mess with now.

Posted by: BartA1

sad but true. Hopefully the DOC legal department doesnt settle and makes these bottom feeders fight it out in appeals courts for several years.

KJ...absolutely on the mark on both counts.

So true......I challenge any "concerned citizen" to walk a tier for a while in 10 Block or DDU and then see how dramatic an opinion change they have.

It was good to see some video of my old stomping grounds M-3 N SMU @SBCC. I was involved on many move teams there in my 8 yrs. and it was without a doubt an experience. The "concerned citizens" of Massachusetts could give a rats ass about the DOC and their officers and they would never have the "balls" to walk any tier at SBCC/MCI-Cedar Junction. I remember after "ONE" of our most famous chowhall riots there were three state reps(KAY KAHN, PATRICIA JEHLEN and JARRET BARRIOS) that came for a visit/tour and they where "ALL" shaking hands with an inmate named Edward O'Brien. These three "NEVER" shaked the hands of any officer and said job well done. Oh and by the way isn't BARRIOS the chairman of the "PUBLIC SAFETY " committee. Nice guy to have on "OUR" side. Not!! One who was there!!!! Be Safe!!

Eddie O'Brien the murderer ???????

Posted by: BartA1

isnt little Eddie in a medium joint?

I still remember the news clips with mommy and daddy bitchng about the evil DA Tom Reilly and publicly accusing some other guy.

Have we all noticed how concerned the liberal scumbags are in this state are when a shitbag kills themselves?

But when a corrections officer kills themselves you would be lucky to find it buried in section "B or C".

I just wish they would sell tickets when they off themselves.

I would hold front row season.

Sounds like a future season ticket holder in the making!

I see a common theme amongst the people who killed themselves. Here is a helpful hint;

Don't murder anyone, do drugs, or rob a store, and the chances of landing in prison in the first place are pretty slim.

Posted by: PearlOnyx

From a moral perspective, if you want to kill yourself, oh well, kill yourself. From a institutional security standpoint, suicides, and suicide attempts can be very disruptive, and dangerous to staff depending on the method. For that reason, it might be something worth looking at.

i'm personally happy that they are dead . of course the media tries to paint the officers out to be guilty . like they murdered them , or paid other hoods to do it. if the guy kills himself , i still go home and sleep soundly .
