I'm a big fan of Fartleks.

The 'show' has its own cadence...stand-by to stand-by...there is nothing to be done about it (I still have my rejection-due-to-age letter).

Posted by: S0007

I'm down with the cadence, regardless of how long it takes- as I understand it, you're good to go if tested by age 35. Come to think of it, I hope I hear nothing until I return from deployment early next year.

Posted by: Sircopalot

Ok, here is the latest... And this comes from the source as of last week. The Colonel and Academy are pushing hard for a class of 150-200 by the end of the year. And the class will be taken off the last test with scores of 95. They stressed that they don't want to get to 94's as it would result in another 900 backround invest...Letters are going out soon to see who is still interested. Also, there is a push get away from the State Police test and have the the State Police hire off the civil service list...And there you have it..

Posted by: SinePari

Still no $$$ yet. No dough, no show.

Posted by: j809

I heard they got the money for 80 only.

Posted by: ems1234

My friend has received a letter for an oral interview in front of a panel of 3 for the Mid-September time frame. He had submitted his application which was due at the end of July. So..it sounds as though they are moving ahead with something possibly.

I heard last night that there will be no 80th. They wanted 900 response letters and they only got about 400. Get ready for another 20,000 people spending a hundred each. You do the math...

Its Fartlek, if your serious about getting in shape I would practice the course. Its used by the USMC and includes various work out stations. Its not just wind sprints.

I would run 5 days a week with 3 mile runs. I am no expert in the MSP Academy, but (most) police academy physical training is almost all endurance and cardio. Good luck.

Posted by: MM1799

Train as much as you want; it can only help you.
It's still going to be a SERIOUS gut check on day 1 -- I promise you wont be ready.
Remember you can always quit.

I just love all of the rumors that keep this thread going

Posted by: mc2252

Christ...as much as us locals often hate the State...we sure do talk about it allot. As for rumors...I heard from a 78th trooper and thats good enough for me. God knows the sneaky money grubbing..... would like a new test anyway so all their sons and nephews can get on. My dad was right...shoulda been a CPA...

It does not matter how many responses are received. If we get the money, there will be a class because we need bodies that bad. If we have to go down the list, we will. Ohh I am sure this source is the end all be all. Don't listen to rumors. Just stay in shape. Keep yourself physically, financially and mentally ready. If and when it does happen, it will happen quick . If you are not prepared because you listened to stupid rumors, you will look back with regret as you are pulling onto New Braintree Rd. at noon time on Day 1 heading home.

Posted by: Johnny Law

If I'm lucky enough to be selected, the only thing that's getting me out of that academy is my own death.

I have no illusions that it is going to be easy, in fact I'm expecting it to suck mightily. If it was easy everyone would do it. Just remember if you're a liar, cheater or thief, don't expect to last very long. I do feel like I'm more prepared vs. a newbie who's never done police work before. Good thing I was on the honor guard.

Locals hate the state, what's that all about? Are you speaking for all locals, or just your own hatred? Sons and nephews? Are you insinuating that you have to be family to get on?

Posted by: sean37

if they want 900 responses wouldnt they just dip down to lower scores??

No we did not do them in the SPA but did do them in the local academy. I know what you mean by "sick". They are a great training tool.

FWIW, I don't hate you guys.. xoxoxo....

Not to beat a dead horse but, one interview one time, right? Not sure how the first was scored- pass/fail or a grade point system. Wouldn't make sense to interview twice, but what do I know.

The new rumor is Deval cut the 80th RTT to fund his new program that gives cash to junkies for turning in their old needles.

One of the best running exercises out there and you can also learn a lot about someones work ethic by watching them run one. Good stuff.

Turn them in? No need for that anymore, just toss them out the car window next to parks, playgrounds, schoolyards, etc; you can just buy/shoplift more at CVS without a prescription now!

Oh don't worry your hospital corners will be "mussed", and even if they survive the forecast on deck always calls for high winds.

You can sleep all you want......as confirmed in a meeting last week, funding was not approved for the 80th.

Legislation will be refiled at the next session.

Posted by: mc2252

Sorry been awhile...no not really insinuating anything. But there are plenty of people out there who want their sons or brothers or nephews to get on. For the most part if you pass the test, and get the call, and your not schmuck you can get in. Staying in is the hard part, and once you do get the sheet in the mail you know there are always strings to be pulled. All the pull in the world dont make New Braintree easy...

Posted by: GottaRun

I'm new to this site. Can you prove that funding was not approved for the 80th RTT? I have an oral interview this month and am going unless the MSP tell me not to. This does concern me though.

Relax, continue on as scheduled. Check through this thread for the line item designation for the state budget given to the state academy and you can always look it up at your leisure. At least you have another 10 years to take the next test, this is my last shot to get in.

I did 3 deployments while waiting between the written test to Day 1 at the SPA. If you're an old bastard like me when I went through the process, you'd better have Plan B in the works; as in another state or another line of work.

Don't know if that was for me, but I already work for my city PD (for 15 years). I haven't been keeping it a secret there that I am going through this process and they are slightly shocked that I would or could leave after that amount of time. I suppose you could say that this process (for me) is my plan B.

LOL, my point being is I already have a good job, so I won't cry if I DON'T make it.

With attitudes like yours, that fosters the "us vs. them" municipal vs. state thing. I don't let the job define me. Insecure much?

Johnny Law needs to talk to someone in the 78th RTT about posting on masscops and how it can help you succeed in the SPA.

What happens on day 1 and the first few weeks of the SPA is nothing but a gut check on who really wants to be there. Many military services do the a same thing in their service academies or training programs, and the point is to see who really has the guts to stick it out. A friend of mine has a saying which I feel is applicable to stress inoculation training; "adversity doesn't build character, it reveals it".

If one walks into Ranger School, Annapolis, or the MSP academy with the attitude "I don't really care if I succeed", let me give you a hint; you won't. All these troopers are trying to relay is that if the MSP is not your goal, then don't bother coming. I'm not fostering the "us vs. them" mentality, just stating simple facts; the MSP loses between 30-40% during an RTT. Our training methods are what they are, I've never said they were superior, simply different from most other departments, and it suits our needs very well.

There are no indicators for who will succeed or who will fail. There have been Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard, many with combat experience, who've resigned. Local police veterans and federal agents. Young and old. PT machines and fat bags. The only thing in common with the graduates is their will to succeed.

And I can totally respect everything you just posted. Many times it's impossible to relay the tone of a post over the internet, so I wasn't being a wise ass when I said I already have a good job. So why shouldn't I make a step to a great job?

SinePari pointed out that most people should have a plan B in place in case this whole thing doesn't go or they don't get picked. A wise statement, especially to those who are not in police work currently. I am fortunate enough to be in police work, so I have that to fall back on if this whole thing doesn't work out. I never said I don't care if I succeed, I wouldn't be in this if I wasn't in it to win. Anything else is wasting the academy's time and my time, and that's not my style.

Im going to go to bat for you here Johnny. When you posted that you had a Plan B, I took it as you are hooked up at where you are if the 80th doesnt happen. I think some took it as if you were saying if you quit 80th you could fall back on your current gig. Either way, good luck. I will agree and stress what others said,if there is an 80th and you are part of it, do yourself a favor and dont carry that " I have something to fall back on mentality."--it will sneak up on you during one of the many weak moments you will have there and next thing you know, you will be talking yourself into climbing then rotten fence and leaving.

Posted by: Johnny Law

Thanks Tango and SinePari for knowing where I was coming from. I didn't mean to come across as a dick. For the record, if I do get picked, I'm in it for the long haul. There is NO WAY I'm going to go crawling back to my old job because I had it easy there. That would be self destructive for sure.

A good friend of mine was in the 79th with only three weeks to go. He advised that at that point he almost quit and came back here, he did suck it up and complete the academy after he got that crazy thought out of his head.

Evan, you're welcome now go find your peephole!! Are you still hiding up at the SPA or did you finally go back to the road? If you are still there (SPA) you might try going back in the ring for another go at it because the first time you were in it you pretty much were knocked out!! Sean I think you got your pair of boots back but you must have left one at Haverhill D.C. in the bathroom!! You both better lock it in or I'm gonna send Noonan out there to straighten both of you out!!

Hi all-

I just wanted to say that I am also a wannabe recruit (95). I've been waiting as long as the next guy and I would drop everything to become a recruit in the "supposed" 80th RTT. I hope that they give us a shot. I have a lot of friends who are Troopers and a few that have made it through the academy. From the older Troopers to the Boots, they have all respected the academy and training by the Drill Instructors. I've been training just in case the call comes. I actually like the fact that we don't have a clue as to when and if they are having a class. It makes checking the mail that much more exciting. Good luck to us all because we are going to need it.

btw - Thanks for all the info that you people have posted. It's helpful and gives us a better understanding as to what we are getting ourselves into. I can't wait!!

Good luck to the trainees of the 80th.....by the way...RUN to the watertower and find your discipline!!!!!

"a few that have made it through the academy"?????? did the rest of the troopers make it through the academy? keep checking your mailbox and training I heard from a very good source (my half brother's step sister's old boyfriend's cousin's step father's former wife's brother in law's sister's godfather) that letters were going to go out sometime in the future......

I meant a few from the last academy. LOL. I hear you on the rumors.

Well good luck to y'all (sorry just got back from Richmond). Im too old now according to the age limit, which is a whole other topic. It is definitely in the top five most challenging law enforcement agencies in the country civilian wise I think. Yes there has always been a sometimes competitive relationship between State and Local, and everyone knows it. Though 90 percent of the guys I meet work well together. Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont are always looking...its Mass and Ct you have to wait a bit longer for.

To inform you youngins......Framingham was originally a poor farm before made into a "encampment" in 1921.

It served as a training site longer than New Braintree did as a prison and academy combined!

It was originally built as a Seventh Day Adventist Bible camp before Dukakis started converting it to a minimum security facility. The NIMBY crowd followed him around during the '88 presidential campaign complaining about having a "dangerous prison" in their pristine community. Weld promised them they wouldn't have a prison, and converted it into the SPA. Instead of walkaway cons, the local trogs got early morning cadence and late night mobile riot tactics. And no, it didn't feel like a prison when I was there. I believe prisons have air conditioning and better chow.

Any truth to interviews this week and the academy projected Jan-Feb time frame?

They are having interviews this week, however there is nothing official past that. IF there is an academy it could be next month it could be next year. No one knows. I think at this point everyone has heard about 60 different rumors about when the 80th will go in.

68 pages and we still have people trying to confirm or deny RUMORS!

Posted by: d02461

I can't confirm or deny anything but I will say that a very good source said that there will an 80th RTT in the future.
Steps

  1. The following pictures show the correct fingers extended and the rest curled for demonstration purposes; to properly use these techniques, however, hold your fingers straight out and place the correct fingers on a flat surface. Do not curl your fingers under your hands.
  2. Learn to count to 9 on the right hand.
    1. Start with the index finger, which is one.

    2. Count out once for each finger towards your pinky (2, 3, 4):

    3. Your thumb by itself equals 5.

    4. Continue counting out with the next four fingers, one at a time (6, 7, 8, 9):

    • And you thought you couldn't do that!
  3. Learn to count by 10s on the left hand.
    1. Using the same technique as above, start with the index finger, which is ten.

    2. Count by tens each time you put down a finger until you reach forty (20, 30, 40):

    3. Your left thumb by itself equals 50.

    4. Continue counting out while with the next four fingers, one at a time (60, 70, 80!!!!!!!!!!!!!!):

Well the state of the commonwealth at this stage leads me to believe that the 79th was the last RTT, and the next class with be the First Massachusetts Municipal/Quasi-Gov't Agency Police/College Cop/Flagger/Tollbooth Worker/Highway Patrol Public Safety Class, which will be held in New Braintree, run by the WCSO of course.

What would be the rumors this month for a new test?

I really hope that this isn't the case, but the more time that goes by, you can't help but think that they might scratch this list. We're lucky that our scores have been active for the last six years.

Is that officially a rumor now?

Governor Deval Patrick, faced with a surprisingly tight budget situation, is tempering some of his campaign promises, saying yesterday that he may have to stretch his much touted plan for 1,000 new police officers over several years and stabilize, rather than cut, property taxes.
"We can definitely start, and we will start down the path of adding more cops on the beat, because I think that's critical," Patrick said yesterday.
Last month, he said on a radio station that "we may not need 1,000 cops" all at once.

“OH YEA”, He was for the boys in blue. Taking the details away. I wonder what Muffy would have done.

So the oral boards went well today............ The members of the board were optimistic and said to keep running. HAHAHAHAHA

I have my interview tomorrow for the 80th, will it be just the interview only, or will there be anything else added, like a PAT?

Thanks

Every legislative session ends with work left undone. Among the proposals left behind when the state Legislature ended its formal sessions Aug. 1 is an idea that deserves to be on the agenda for the next session: Merging the MBTA Transit Police into the State Police.
The Transit Police is a small organization - 257 officers strong - with a big territory to cover. While most of the crimes the officers must cover are in Boston and neighboring communities served by subways and metro buses, their jurisdiction extends the length of commuter rail lines as well. The MBTA system - and Transit Police jurisdiction - now includes 175 eastern Massachusetts cities and towns.
When a car break-in is reported at a commuter rail parking lot in Franklin, for instance, a Transit Police officer must drive out from Boston to investigate. It would be more efficient to put jurisdiction for those lots in the hands of local police or, as the proposal suggests, the state police.
Better enforcement in commuter rail parking lots is one of the merger's selling points in the suburbs, but the city would benefit from more officers stationed in the core MBTA service area.
The proposal is being promoted by the union representing Transit Police officers, who stand to gain higher pay by becoming instant State Police officers. The Transit Police would live on as a special unit within the State Police assigned to the MBTA transit system, just as a similar State Police unit is responsible for Logan Airport.
The attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and especially terrorist attacks since then focused on mass transit systems, demonstrated the need for better coordination between law enforcement agencies. Those concerns should play into this discussion, as should a serious cost-benefit analysis. If there are safety benefits and savings to be gained by this merger, legislators shouldn't let turf battles stand in the way. OH BOY

Did I miss something? What would be the point of merging the MSP and MBTA only to have a special unit assigned to the MBTA transit system? We already have a "special unit" assigned to the MBTA transit system. Its called the Transit Police.

Posted by: SinePari

...and after the first available wave of transfers...the "former" MBTA Sgts and Lts would be running for juicy barracks assignments, and the members of the 79th RTT will be riding trains out of Alewife and South Station.

VOTE NO

Posted by: WaterPistola

Alewife is very dangerous...haha Sine, wouldn't the MBTA police just stay the transit police? but under a unit of the SP? why would the 79th RTT be riding trains?

They're called the grammar police...and they're on the way to your house to give summons for crappy sentence structure, lack of capitals and poor use of punctuation.

If they do give a new test, do yourself a favor and complete the "Rosetta Stone" level 1 English language pack first.

LOL KJ. Also don't be like the two guys in my group of interviewees. One guy looked like a soup sandwich and that he just rolled out of bed. No haircut, suit looked like it was laying on his bedroom floor (all wrinkled) and no tie. Or the other guy who never shut his cell phone off and called undue attention to himself.

I was at the SPA today and it seems oral boards are going well. Just a word to the wise: If you do have an oral board scheduled... DO NOT

1) Take 1 last drag of your cigarette just before entering the lobby of the academy

2) Dispose of cigarette on academy lawn

3) Exhale smoke of said last drag inside the academy lobby

4) Walk to the Trooper on the desk and say "You guys have a bathroom here or what?"

Hey Johnny Law...We had a couple of those "soup sandwiches" in our group also. Overall however I was generally impressed with the caliber of candidates from a 6 year old test. A lot of good local officers came through our board, all representing themselves and their departments well. Hopefully they will fund this class.

5) Also do not walk into the clearly marked Dispatch center in front of the SPA.

No joke about 15 people walked right into the double doors with about 7 signs on them saying Secure Facility, do not enter, authorized personel only, and the 2 Bright red lettered signs that say Interviews proceed around (not through) this building to the back.

Dane-
It was formerly known as the "Pioneer Valley Academy", and as the legend goes, it is haunted. Two folks died on the grounds. A construction worker who died during the construction of "B" building (chow hall, et. al.) and a student who hung himself in the 70's. Surprisingly, this young lad has not been followed in fate by any of the newer "students". And, as someone who was formerly stationed there a looong time ago, my opinion is the "haunting" stories are true. Ask anyone who has been stationed there working a mid shift.

Yes, a certain "Mall Cop" has listed 1 future plan.

Yes, even after my road trip to New Braintree I will continue to cross my fingers.

I've said too much, now....

I just received my score for the Municipal Police Officer exam in the mail from HRD, it also came with a form that said the following:

1.If you took both the 2007 and 2008 exams, your 2008 exam result will replace your 2007 exam result.

2. In the spring of 2009, HRD will be administering one examination for the three state police officer titles: Municipal Police Officer, MBTA Transit Police Officer, and State Trooper.

3.If you are interested in becoming a State Trooper, you must take the 2009 exam.

4. If you are interested in becoming a Municipal or Transit Police Officer, you may opt not to take the 2009 exam, since your eglibility from the 2008 exam will continue until October 2010,

5. If you take both the 2008 and 2009 exams, your 2009 exam result will replace your 2008 exam result.

Information about the Municipal Police Officer, MBTA Transit Police Officer and State Trooper Examination will be available at the HRD website by Nov 1, 2008.

“Together we can”

Posted by: TopCop24

SHOULD this be true are they going to continue the RTT or are we going with 1st CSRTT to go along the lines of 1st SPMA

Posted by: nirtallica

The good news is that there will be an 80th RTT of the current list, since the job cannot wait that long for a class. It will be at least a year from the time of the next test before an RTT will enter the SPA. By the time of graduation and field training is completed, it will be almost two years before an RTT hits the road. We need a class ASAP. Also, I wouldn't count on the hiring process or standards changing, just the venue of the exam. There will still be RTTs for now.

A supplemental letter was mailed out with the scores from the test they just gave in June 2008.

These two bullets pertain to the MSP:

* In the spring of 2009, HRD will be administering one examination for the three state police officer titles: Municipal Police Officer, MBTA Transit Police Officer, and State Trooper.

* If you are interested in becoming a State Trooper, you must take the 2009 exam.

The process won't change, but the exam results might... it will be interesting to see how they decide to handle scoring and veterans preference with the blended test. Will MSP switch to Civil Circus' fancy "banding" system? Will vets still receive 2 points, or leapfrog non-vets?

Perhaps they will give you three different scores and rankings. Vets get 2 points on their Trooper Score. Those who were one of the first 10,000 to purchase a Charlie Card get 2 points on their Transit Score. Anyone who felt that the test was too difficult for them because they didn't learn English until they had been in the country illegally for 5
