I had previously posted looking for info on starting a K9 unit for my agency. I am still in the process, and have been asked to acquire some information regarding insurance for the dog. I've been told the dog must be covered by the agency 24 hours a day, as the handlers homeowners policy would not cover the dog while at his or her residence. Is there anything else I should be aware of?? Thanks for the reply's.

The insurance wil probabally not be necessary. Speak with some of the local vetrinarians about donating their services. It is a tax break for them and looks good for their business and reputation. Same with food and supplies. If you have a large pet store in or near your community they are a great help. As far as your homeowners policy the dog is a tool just like your firearm or cruiser. Do you have to get special insurance because you bring your weapon or cruiser home. The city is responsible for the the dog ultimately. This is why the person assigned to the K-9 should be someone with a great desire to not only have a k-9 partner but DO SOMETHING with it. This alone should cover any problems with insurance. I do have a friend on MSP assiged a K-9 who had trouble with his homeowner insurance people but I believe it was resolved. I will let you know.

K-9 Leon, I believe he is talking about liability insurance, not medical insurance. And as far as the city being responsible for the dog, I believe he is researching liability insurance that the city can buy, not him personally. Not all insurance carriers that police departments or cities use would cover an unintended bite during off-duty hours. That would leave the city to pay out a settlement instead of the insurance company. Buying a supplemental liability policy for the K9 would cover that.

Being a responsable handler would also cover that.

most places "self insure" their cruisers...how does it work with a K9 ? Is outside insurance required ? How much does it cost ? Just nosey..

Well gee, thanks. But no matter how responsible you are as a handler, you can still find yourself in a situation which brings liability on your agency or municipality. Even a completely justified use of force involving the K9 can result in an out-of-court settlement.

You will find that once your homeowners insurance finds that you have a German Shepard or Police Dog on your property they will cancel your homeowners insurance and you will be required to find a company to replace them. Which usually means the Mass Fair Plan at about $2000 pre residence on average. There are several laws which protect and indemnify the handler however the insurance companies ignore this and consider you an exposure and cancel you.
