INDIANAPOLIS --
An Indianapolis police officer has been placed on administrative duty because of allegations he was working at a pub -- despite having told the police department he was sick -- on the night that a man was fatally shot there.
Police said they also are investigating whether Officer Shannon McComas has partial ownership in the establishment -- something that, because he is a law enforcement officer and because the pub serves alcohol, would violate state law.
Authorities said surveillance video shows McComas inside Durty Nelly's Eatery and Pub early New Year's Day as someone shot five people outside, killing security worker Ronnie Croom Jr.
McComas had been scheduled to work for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department but called in sick, police said. McComas' wife is the pub's manager, and his father-in-law is the owner, police said.
"From some of the statements from some of the people that were working the night the shooting happened, he may have actually been working inside the bar that night," Indianapolis police Sgt. Matt Mount told 6News' Jack Rinehart on Thursday.
McComas has denied having ownership in the pub, police said. State law prohibits law enforcement officers from holding a financial interest in an establishment that serves alcohol.
Police say the shooting happened early Tuesday morning as security workers were ushering people involved in a fight from the bar to the parking lot.
Also Thursday, police seized the liquor license of the pub, located at 2805 N. Franklin Road. It was not immediately clear why that action was taken.
Police said Tuesday morning's shooting happened during a disturbance that began inside the bar and involved up to 30 people. Security workers were ushering people into a parking lot when the gunfire started outside shortly before 3:30 a.m., police said.
Croom, 30, was shot and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The four other wounded people survived.
City zoning inspectors cited the pub in November on accusations it held live entertainment there despite not being zoned for such activity. Also in November, state excise police cited the bar, accusing it of serving alcohol to a minor.
Police said anyone with information about Tuesday morning's shooting should call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
INDIANAPOLIS --
Indianapolis Metro Police Officer Shannon McComas was arrested Sunday night on a preliminary murder charge following a shooting that killed a security guard and injured four people outside an east-side Indianapolis pub on New Year's Day.
McComas was also expected to be charged with assisting a criminal, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported.
McComas was being held without bond Monday morning. The shooting happened in the early-morning hours at Durty Nelly's, a bar and pub.
According to police, McComas handed a stolen gun to Sunungura Rusununguko, 29, who was also charged last week with murder in connection with the same incident and told Rusununguko to "take care of the problem," Rinehart reported.
McComas is still the focus of an IMPD investigation over alleged involvement and/or ownership of the bar. His wife is the pub's manager, and his father-in-law is the owner, police said.
He was working at the bar that night and had called in sick that night on his IMPD shift, police said.
Ronnie Croom Jr. died in the shooting, which happened after a disturbance involving as many as 30 people began at a party thrown by a promotion company shortly before 3:30 a.m.
Authorities said they believe security guards working on behalf of the promotion company began ushering people outside after the disturbance began. Croom, who was one of the promotion company's guards, and four other people were shot outside the pub, police said.
Witnesses told investigators they saw Rusununguko -- a security guard working on behalf of the pub, not the promotion company -- firing the shots that killed Croom, authorities said.
