KINGSTON - A Kingston Planning Board member allegedly threatened to kill three men and fired a gun as they tried to repossess his wife’s pickup truck.
Police were called to the home of Joel Michaud, 36, of 28 South St. at 11:07 p.m. Wednesday.
John Locke, owner of American Asset Recovery Specialists in Ipswich, said Joel Michaud told three of his employees that if they did not leave, ‘‘they would be eating through a straw.’’
One of the men, Chris Nardone of Revere, said Michaud got a gun, fired it once in the air and once at the ground, and then pointed it at Nardone’s brother and co-worker Joe and told him the next shot would be in his chest.
‘‘I believe if the police didn’t come right then, he would have shot my brother,’’ Nardone said. ‘‘He did it right in front of three of his kids. Two of them were watching in the front window.’’
The Michauds have four children.
Locke said he told his employees by phone to sit in their car and call the police.
Before going to the house, the men stopped at the Kingston police station to file paperwork for repossessing Lisa Michaud’s Ford F-350 pickup.
Locke said they were warned by police that the Michauds could be a problem.
‘‘The police said, ‘You’d better be careful; you’re probably going to have trouble with this guy,’’’ he said.
When the men arrived at the Michaud home, Lisa Michaud, 37, came outside and told them they could not take her truck. She then told her son to get her husband, police said.
After Joel Michaud was arrested, a .40-caliber SIG Sauer semiautomatic pistol was found inside the home, police said. Police also reported finding two shell casings and a round of live ammunition near the entrance to the home.
Police revoked Michaud’s license to carry a firearm and seized 13 legally permitted rifles, shotguns and handguns.
Michaud was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, threatening to commit a crime (serious bodily injury) and improperly storing a firearm.
Reached at his home on Thursday, Michaud said he had no comment on the incident.
In June 2006, Michaud was charged with assault and battery after an alleged domestic violence incident. At that time, police issued an emergency restraining order against him. The charge was later dismissed.
Michaud owns and runs Ponderosa Pines Wood Products in Kingston.
Michaud was released on personal recognizance on Wednesday night. He was arraigned Thursday in Plymouth District Court.
Michaud ran unsuccessfully for a Kingston selectman seat in 2003. He was elected to the planning board in 2004.
Thomas Bouchard, chairman of the planning board, said Michaud has a history of missing meetings and that he has asked him to resign several times, but Michaud has always refused.
‘‘I explained to him several times that it’s nothing against him personally; we just need a member to be there,’’ Bouchard said.
Bouchard said that if Michaud does not attend the next board meeting, he will ask the other members to vote to ask for his resignation.
