LYNDEBOROUGH, N.H. -- In Lyndeborough, most of the town's police officers are back, now that the chief is gone.
Seven of the eight officers who walked off the job when Chief James Basinas was reinstated by a judge in November have returned to duty. At a special town meeting on Saturday, residents eliminated the police chief's position.
Basinas and selectmen have been battling since last February when he was put on leave, then fired. In November, a judge ordered the town to reinstate Basinas until a trial over his firing could be held next month. When he returned, all eight of his officers either quit or took leave, and three neighboring towns withdrew mutual aid agreements.
Wednesday, seven of the eight officers returned to duty under the leadership of acting police administrator Richard Darling.
