A 23-year-old Marshfield man failed to show up in court yesterday to answer charges that he dragged a transit police officer roughly 30 feet with his car after a New Year’s Eve confrontation near North Station.
Police obtained a warrant for the arrest of Pat Tauro after he defaulted on his arraignment in Boston Municipal Court on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, said Lt. Sal Venturelli.
Tauro initially was arrested Monday after transit police were called to the Boston Bruins [team stats] Pro Shop on the west side of the TD Banknorth Garden shortly before 10:30 a.m. on a report of a man causing a commotion.
When police arrived, the shop’s employees told them the suspect had just left and gotten into a car, police said. When they went outside, the man saw them, abruptly placed the car in reverse and began to drive away.
When the officers ordered him to stop and get out of the car, he did, but ran back a moment later to his car and reached for something in his waistband, police said.
Officers Derek LoPilato and Ida Candreva tried to grab him, but Tauro managed to get back into the driver’s seat, put the car into reverse again and sped off, with the driver’s door open and LoPilato holding onto the suspect, police said.
Tauro allegedly continued to drive toward a concrete wall and an oncoming delivery truck, stopping about 2 feet away from the vehicle. LoPilato was able to free himself, and the suspect accelerated toward a fenced-in parking lot before stopping and being captured, police said. LoPilato was treated at Massachusetts General Hospital and released.
