Firefighters commended for rescuing driver
By Paul Leighton

BEVERLY - Three Beverly Fire Department officers and five firefighters have been commended for rescuing a man from his wrecked vehicle after a crash on Common Lane on Dec. 12.
The victim, 22-year-old Brian Zager of Dyer Road in Beverly Farms, suffered serious injuries and is still hospitalized.
Fire Chief Richard Pierce issued the commendations to the members of Group 4, who used rescue tools to remove Zager from a car that had smashed head-on into a tree.
Those receiving commendations were Deputy Chief William Walsh, Lt. William Reilly, Lt. Donald Philpot, and firefighters Steve White, Peter Davis, Michael Cronin, Robert Josselin and Paul Roberts.
At 1:15 a.m. on Dec. 12, Engines 5 and 3 and Deputy Chief Walsh responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident on Common Lane. They found a severely damaged vehicle wrapped around a tree with a semiconscious victim trapped inside.
"I was amazed to see that the victim was still alive," Walsh said in a press release from the Fire Department. "Basically the victim was encased in metal."
The crews worked for 40 minutes with three different hydraulic rescue tools to free Zager, who was suffering from traumatic injuries. Paramedics from Northeast Regional Ambulance assessed Zager, and Beverly police officers secured the scene.
"All three agencies working at the scene worked as one to get the job done," Walsh said. "The professionalism of the police officers and paramedics that worked at the scene can't be understated."
