Can someone please clarify some of the stuff for the PT test. I thought it was supposed to be standardized, but everywhere I go it seems to be different.
For the bench: Must the smith machine be used, and how far does the bar go down for it to count? Also, what weight to they count the bar as?

The run: When reading what the academy wants, it says FLAT ground... is this a minimum qual or can the departments deviate for this. Different training for different terrains.. Ive just decided to run hills to round everything out, but it would just be nice to know for the future. Im one of those who wants to not just squeak by....

Just keep in mind that weather conditions may require you run indoors. The academy track is around the indoor range thus ventilation system tends to keep air very dry and this will impact your time for any running done on that track. Tests run outside I know of have been done on flat ground. The state tries to be standardized but there is nothing which prevents a department from expecting more and some do both in physical agility and firearms quals. Keep in mind also you must requal by Cooper standards every three years while on the job. Get in top shape and follow habits that will keep you there.

Cool, cool. Appreciate the info. Im good on passing, but Im now at the stage where I want to set a land speed record, and put up some good numbers for the rest of the requirements. How bad is it up there in the academy gym? Any tips to running that? Ive been up there before, but never got the full effect of the air quality.. everyone is telling me to expect my run time to be a minute or so higher than usual because of the conditions... and I definately dont want to make it that far and bomb up there.

Don't sweat running as much as the rest. The #1 cause of failures is situps. Good luck. As for academy gym it is somewhat limited but they go to the NHTI gym on the same campus which is good.

My Grand MA could pass a PT test without just squeaking by.

And she is dead.

Congratulations..good for her.
Glad I wont have to run into her on the streets.
Lets try to be a little more pro-active with legitimate questions. The last I heard, police departments cant get enough canidates/ officers due to the fact they cant pass the PT test... and most are failing on the simple sit up. You should be happy to hear that there are still motivated people out there who want to surpass the minimum standard.

I am happy you are motivated.

I'm just making a point I believe to be true.

Good Luck. Stay motivated and don't stop training if you get on the job.

Cuz you might get your ass handed to you.

Indoor track-Run on the outsides on the straightaways then cut into the corners on the turn. Think Nascar, and watch out for the 1 person that always pukes!

awesome. Now if I could just get rid of this nasty chest cold that I just got maybe I could recouperate my lungs to at least a decent run time. Thats 3 months of running every day down the tubes...
