Main Page Just getting into DOC

Hi Guys, I have been a member on this site for quite sometime and this is my first post, you all seem very helpful to others now maybe you can help me. I have just payed my $75 for the March 2008 exam and I am also taking classes in the summer for CJ for my associates degree. If you could briefly tell me what will happen after the exam, will I get a call? Is the exam difficult? Any key areas to study more than others? Any info you can give me would be great. Thank you in adavance.

been awhile , but my guess for a good test result would be reading comprehension , good nights sleep , blah , blah, blah.................

you know the drill. no telling how long you will have to wait for your mark , but a few months wouldn't be out of the ordinary.

from the sounds of things the DOC has tightened up the interview and pre physical. it's group 4 civil service , max out after 7 years at just shy of $29 an hour , pension and bennies.

Thanks for the input guys, I'm trying to work on my grammar and as for my other posts I must have forgotten about the 3 that I wrote 4 years ago, give me a break will ya? There is ball busting then there is just being bored at home. As for the guys that actually contributed honest advice, thanks a lot and I am on a new diet, studying more, and I have a workout routine that I actually have been sticking to. I also have a freind that is a Lieutenant in a prision and Im sure he will help out as much as he can, but no matter what I am ready to "jump through the hoops" to get what I want. Thanks again guys and take care.

Seven years to max out? Way too long for top step.

was 7 when i started , we bargained down to 4 and then gave it away 2 contracts ago. some county jails have a 10 year max out !

the state knows most kids won't stay around , so they get cheap help until people quit or move on .

What's the max pay rate?

little better than $60,000. 3% raise this June and with shift diff ,roll call , holiday pay, maybe $65,000 ?

the deferred compensation plan is a nice set up for augmenting a pension.

think it's up to $14,000 a year ( i put in $5,200 a year )

not many jobs left with a pension and benefits , so at least we have that

actually Deferred comp is up to 15.5k a year On paper they take out 600.00 every two weeks but with the tax savings you see about 515 or so taken out of your check. The new smart plans they have that invest by your anticipated retirement date are pretty good as well. Not sure if its gonna go up anytime soon IRS usually makes the call on that. It was max at like 10500 a year when I started contributing.

65k top step without OT isnt too shabby. Is 7 Steps high compared to other departments. The wonderful union I have It takes us 14 steps to reach top pay.

yup , got corrected on that today in work. one guy said you can contribute more after age 55 or something like that, he's maxed out and should be sitting pretty with the 80% and what ever is sitting in his ING account after 32 years

We have something similar- TSP. It's a pretty good investment.

any tax shelter that takes the money out before you get it is a good idea. the trick is to live long enough after retirement to spend it

Just keep in mind you can't access that money until retirement, unless your employer okays it.

I kick in a good chunk to ING every week, I've been buying US Savings Bonds for 20+ years, and I have my Social Security quarters in. My wife should be all set in retirement, because I'll probably get hit by a bus right after I pull the pin.

Dont forget the lovely Government Pension offset. Social Security penalizes you for having a public pension and yanks most of what you would get for Social Security.

Except if you work for a State Authority eg MBTA, MassPIke, Massport, Masshighway. Then you get your full social security benefits... I should have been a toll booth takers!!!

About half. But, I paid for years into the system so I'm taking whatever I'm entitled to!!
