PEABODY - The Fire Department's ranks have been bolstered by seven new full-time firefighters. The city welcomed four firefighters at a swearing-in ceremony in October and three more at a ceremony last week in City Hall. The new additions, three of whom have family ties to the department, are expected to begin the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Recruit Training Program in January. Ron Ciampa, 27, Scott Patturelli, 36, and Steve Lynch, 28, are the newest recruits. Ciampa is a former plumber and Patturelli has a background in chemistry, Chief Steve Pasdon said. Lynch is the son of deceased Peabody firefighter Kevin Lynch, who died serving the city. He is also the nephew of Deputy Chief Paul Lynch. Adam Skelton, 38, Michael Eliuk, 26, Kevin Pasdon, 23, and Gregory Jordan, 30, have been with the department since October. Skelton worked previously as an emergency medical technician. Pasdon, who is the chief's son, was also an EMT. Eliuk is the son of the department's fire alarm superintendent. Jordan previously worked for the Statehouse police force. The academy in Stow lasts 12 weeks. Trainees learn basic firefighting skills, from pump operation to handling hazardous materials. They also put out live fires. "The timing is perfect because they'll still be back (to Peabody) before the heavy vacation period begins next summer," Pasdon said. The new recruits nearly give the department a full roster of uniformed personnel. It's a welcome development since budget constraints dating back to 2002 slowed hiring and left some positions unfilled. "We're at 100," Pasdon said. "We're down three." He's excited about his new charges. "It's great to have the help," he said.
