Firefighters seek permission to burn house down
By Lynne Hendricks

ROWLEY - Fire Chief James Broderick has been approached by the owner of 982 Haverhill St. about burning down his house so firefighters can get some hands-on training.
The white, single-story house is 50 feet off Route 133 and is distinguishable by its street number, 9-8-2, spray-painted on the front side.
"You can't miss it," said Selectman Dave Petersen. "(The owner) wants to take it down, after clearing the rest of the land for a commercial development. It's good for him obviously, because he doesn't have to tear it down, and it's good for us."
There was no objection last week by selectmen, who also thought it would be a good opportunity for firefighters to get unparalleled training.
"Normally these kinds of places don't become readily available," Petersen said.
Vice Chairman Richard Moses said his only concern was that the owner (identified as the Abuzahra Trusts) should clean up the mess afterward.
"I don't have a problem with them using it or burning it," he said. "I just don't want to have the charred remains standing there when they're done. They should cart away the remains."
Petersen thinks the owner won't mind adhering to that condition. "He's the one offering it, and my expectation is he'll comply with whatever cleanup," he said. "He wants to clean the site anyway, so I don't think it would be a problem."
It was decided that abutting home- and landowners would be notified in advance, to allow them to voice any concerns or objections, and the project would depend on the approval and permitting of regulatory agencies like the state Department of Environmental Protection and the local Board of Health and Conservation Commission.
Petersen also recommended there be proper safety procedures in place on the day of the burn, and perhaps a police detail on hand to ensure there's no bottleneck on such a busy street.
"It will cause quite a stir if they decide to do it," Petersen said.

I've seen Southboro do this maybe 5+ years ago, good for the guy thinkin of the FD

Berlin burnt a house down in October because a construction company was going to rip it down. They saw an opportunity to get some work in for the FD and it wouldn't cost the construction company anything.

I think in an actual fire, the object is to save the building and put out the fire.
