A New York City police academy instructor will be arraigned on Friday in connection with the shooting death of his girlfriend, who was also a New York City police officer.
On Sept. 29, police found 28-year-old Sonia Garcia dead in the Bay Shore home she shared with her fiancée, 27-year-old Alexis Chaparro.
Police said she died of a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Chaparro called 911 shortly before 6 a.m. to report the shooting, police said.
Chaparro was suspended without pay during the investigation. Police ruled out suicide within days.
Nearly three months later, Chaparro's indictment is the first in connection with Garcia's death.
Last October, state Sen. Eric Adams, upset at the pace of the investigation, declared that police and prosecutors had hit a "law enforcement brick wall" and urged Gov. Eliot Spitzer to call on state police to assist. Ultimately, local police completed the investigation.
"You're dealing with a trained member of the police department that is possibly involved, someone with knowledge of evidence, someone who knows how to destroy evidence ... or alter evidence," he said at the time.
The couple met at the academy and graduated together in 2003, according to her family.
Garcia, a mother of two young girls, was a four-year veteran of the NYPD. On the morning she died, she had just returned from an overnight shift at the 77th Precinct in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, where she was assigned to school safety.
Chaparro is expected to appear in court in Riverhead Friday morning.
