FLORENCE, Ky. --
Authorities shut down a drug operation Thursday that distributed nearly $4 million of marijuana each month.
The drugs were shipped from southern California and sold from the 513 Store in Walnut Hills, and business owner Maurice Ferguson was arrested by federal agents at the site of a second store in Florence, shortly before its scheduled grand opening.
We figure them to be one of the largest ever in this area, and it's been ongoing for years, said Russ Neville of the Drug Enforcement Administration. This takedown today, with the total disruption of this organization, it's going to be a major impact for the marijuana industry in northern Kentucky and southern Ohio.
Agents said they expected to make up to a dozen more arrests in connection with the bust, with six people already taken into custody.
One former drug dealer, who did not want to be identified, said he thought this bust would be a surprise for many.
"A lot of people who will see this interview will see this and say, 'I remember that guy when he hung on the street and did some of the things that these people are doing', but I never thought we'd have big scale operations like that up here."
"They were doing anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 pounds a month, and the street value of that is about $3.6 million, and that money goes back, get shipped back from Cincinnati," Neville said.
