PLYMOUTH TWP., Mich. --
Police said the alleged killer of a Michigan Department of Corrections officer is in the hospital after he attempted to commit suicide hours after fatally shooting Joseph Candie, 39.
The shooting occurred at the Shell Gas Station near Five Mile Road and Beck Road in Plymouth Township around 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Police said the shooter, who is also a Michigan Department of Corrections officer, followed Candie to the gas station after his shift ended at the Scott Correctional Facility.
Witnesses said they saw Candie and man argue at the gas station and then the man fired a shot at Candie.
"It was described as a heated argument that lasted at least two or three minutes," said Plymouth Township police chief Tom Tiderington.
Candie's family told Local 4 he was a good man and never had an argument with anybody and he would always help people in need.
The alleged shooter drove himself to Belle Isle where he shot himself in the head.
An ambulance transported the man to Detroit Receiving Hospital. Health officials said the man is alive, but there is no word on his condition.
Candie worked for 14 years with the Corrections Department. He was an overnight shift commander.
Scott is a multi-security level facility that houses female prisoners.
Candie served in the Army for four years and spent two years in the National Guard.
He left behind a 10-year-old daughter and a fiancee.
"He was a good person. He was a loving father. He was hard working and he was a student," said his Fiancee.
Local 4 talked to a witness who performed CPR on Candie at the gas station. He said he wants Candie's family to know he did not die alone.
