HOBOKEN, N.J. — One police officer tore an Achilles tendon and another suffered hand and shoulder injuries when they subdued a man who had jammed a gun into one cop's ribcage.
Frank Gilyard, 28, of Irvington, faces charges including robbery, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, hindering arrest and aggravated assault resulting in an injury to an officer, cops said.
The incident began when a 23-year-old Hoboken resident told police that three men had beaten and robbed him on the 300 block of Marshall Drive just before 11:20 p.m. Monday, cops said.
The victim pointed out the men, who were still on the block, and when police approached, all three ran, police said.
Officer Emil Donofrio chased Gilyard into a nearby apartment building and tackled him on the stairs. They fought, and Gilyard pulled out a gun and jammed it into Donofrio's side.
Just then, backup arrived and wrested the Jimenez 9-millimeter away from Gilyard, who continued to fight back, police said. Cops said they "feared for their lives" and continued punching Gilyard several times until he stopped resisting.
After Gilyard was arrested, police said, the officers found 11 bags of crack cocaine that he was trying to dump in the back seat of the patrol car.
Officer Mario Novo tore his Achilles tendon in the fight, while Donofrio sustained minor hand and shoulder injuries.
Dilyard was taken to Hoboken University Medical Center with a head injury.
