KNOXVILLE, Tenn. A Knoxville Police Department officer was being treated Tuesday night for abrasions to his head after he rear-ended a sport utility vehicle at the intersection of Jacksboro Pike and Essary Drive in North Knoxville, authorities said.
The crash occurred shortly before 7 p.m. near Knoxville Fire Station No. 15. KPD Lt. Dusty Lane said that Offi cer Taylor Davis was responding to a nonemergency call in Fountain City. His lights and siren were not activated, Lane said.
Davis apparently rearended a Jeep Cherokee that had stopped at the intersection in the northbound lane of Jacksboro Pike, Lane said. None of the four people in the SUV were taken for treatment, he said.
Land said the offi cer's injury was not life threatening and he was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Robbery suspect nabbed during traffic stop A man suspected in a trio of bank robberies was arrested Monday night during a traffi c stop, Blount County Sheriff James Berrong said in a statement.
Berrong said Chessie Adam Ayers, 19, of Maryville, was being held on three counts of forgery on bonds totaling $3,000 pending a hearing in Blount County General Sessions Court Wednesday at 1:30.
A Blount County Sheriff's deputy was on patrol when he spotted a 1998 Chrysler van speeding and driving recklessly on the U.S. Highway 129 Bypass. The deputy pulled the driver over in a parking lot in Springbrook Corporate Center. During the course of the traffic stop, the deputy found several credit cards and personal checks belonging to other individuals. The forgery charges stem from the stolen checks that were written at three different locations in Blount County, Berrong said.
Berrong said the investigation linked Ayers a 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck stolen in Blount County and later recovered in Sweetwater. Ayers also has become a suspect in bank robberies in Knoxville and Atlanta over the past few weeks, Berrong said. The FBI and the Knoxville Police Department are investigating those robberies.
