ORLANDO, Fla. -- Orlando police used tear gas to end a four-hour standoff at an Orlando apartment complex eary Wednesday morning. Police said a man fired several shots inside the Avalon apartments on Semoran Boulevard and Pershing Avenue.
Investigators said he then barricaded himself in his home.
The Avalon apartments on Semoran Boulevard were surrounded by Orlando police and the SWAT team after 26-year-old James Elysee barricaded himself in one of the units. According to the Orlando Police Department, Elysee's roommate called 911 to report that he had fired shots into the air.
"She indicated she had a small infant and that shots were fired within 10 feet of her. When she started running from the individual, more shots were fired," said Sgt. Barbara Jones of the Orlando Police Department.
Officers said they established contact with Elysee, but he went back inside and refused to surrender. Police evacuated several apartments and waited for crisis negotiators to arrive. They said they knew all along that they were dealing with a dangerous, hardcore criminal.
"He's got 22 felony charges and 18 misdemeanor charges, so there's a significant history there. We take that into account," Jones said.
Elysee eventually came out and surrendered to police after tear gas was used to clear his apartment, ending the four-hour standoff.
Police were still trying to sort out exactly why Elysee did what he did. They suspect that he had an issue with his girlfriend or his ex-girlfriend, not with his roommate who called 911.
Police said that, at the very least, Elysee is looking at aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
