RISP... Test Soon?

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

Posted by: CTrain

I spoke to two RI Troopers in October at a Criminal Justice fair, they said that they should be testing within a year... Recently, the RISP Recruitment Video has been added to the front page of their website... Hopefully that is good news. Anybody else hear anything recently?

Posted by: GD

The state of RI, just laid off 400 state worker,s I wouldn't hold my breath!!!Not to sound negative.

Posted by: CTrain

Ahhh that's dissapointing news

Posted by: MarineMustang

Keep a close eye on the site. Funding was recently approved to begin another recruitment. Intel I received was the process will begin "very soon"

Posted by: CTrain

Thanks for the update MarineMustang, I've also heard the same thing (second-hand) from an RI Trooper

Posted by: LawMan3

I'm definately signing up to take the exam...would be great to get on RISP, real squared away from what I've heard...kinda along the same lines as MSP i'm guessing

Posted by: msp428

Along the same lines except, if this sounds at all possible, harder to get on with.

Posted by: samadam78

RISP are the best of the best and i have been told by a VERY reliable source that they WILL be hiring this year

Posted by: phuzz01

Ahhhhhh, the RISP testing process.....for those who plan on going through it, STAND BY!

Posted by: LawMan3

bring it on.

Posted by: BIG IRISH

I was just told Friday by one of my friends who is a RI Tpr. that they "Cancelled" the class for this year due to funding. Sorry for the bad news folks.

Posted by: 1234hey

Big Irish, what's up bro?

There goes my plans for taking that exam!

Posted by: BIG IRISH

James, give me a PM if you need any info.

Posted by: CHICwithBADGE

Hey Big Irish, good to hear you're on the mend. I just received 3 more Masscops infractions - shooting for the banned list. Boo Hoo Hooo. Some even accused me of being Mechanixman. Can you help set the record straight? Thanks big boy.

Now I really think you are a tool (and mechanixman's alt). Please understand that uncovering frauds is a national sport here at masscops. I wish I could pull up Mechanixman's old posts, because I remember him (you) randomly kissing Big Irish's ass (god only knows why). I think he even posted back wondering who the hell you were.

Someone cross-checked his/her ip address didn't they?

Heard an ad on the radio last night for state police recruitment.... the website has a video up about the recruitment as well...

http://www.risp.ri.gov/

Posted by: KJack815

i'm fairly certain that video has been online for quite a while now

Posted by: SBU29

They're taking apps. now, check the website.

Posted by: 1234hey

I just signed up!

Posted by: CTrain

Thanks for the update. Maybe see some of you guys/gals there?

Posted by: 1234hey

Definitely.

Looks like this is going to happen fairly quickly with the application deadline sometime in August and it also states on the PAT requirements that the information is only viewable within a few weeks of the actual PAT.

Situps in 1 minute - 40 situps
Pushups - 33 pushups
1.5 mile run - 11 minutes 58 seconds

I you tubed "rhode island state police" to see if I can find some cool videos, but came up with this:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=XBqx_MA7QnA

Posted by: HELPMe

^ LOL the person who made that video is a tool.

Fifty bucks an app is a little pricey. Concidering how small the department is, and the likely hood that everyone in RI will apply, this is going to be a tough department to get on.

Hard isn't even the word last time they had a process they had like something crazy like 5000 applicants for less then 40 spots in the academy.
I think they said 37 roster spots this time around....
And yes they are a small dept. but they are considered the best of the best when it comes to state agencies.

I tihink you might find 1 or 2 people on here who disagree...

Excuse me?

Posted by: crisco88

But in regards to the hiring practice they do it the correct way. They offer the test to any one who can PRE-QUALIFY, meaning x amount of college credits or military service, no severe criminal background violations etc. Then the physical is offered which washes out canidates, which is quite a few ( too many NY SYSTEMS in R.I., great sinful food but nonetheless a hazard to your health) then the background checks which, from I know from a P.O. in R.I. are very stringent where even a bad credit report could bounce you and that is a local p.d. not the RISP whose standards are even higher.

Posted by: WaterPistola

yeah I might go just for the testing experience haha

Posted by: 1234hey

I got a card stating the application deadline, August 3, 2008, and the expected academy commencement to begin in June 2009. It does seem like their process will weed out a lot of people with the preliminary application, the exam, and then the PAT. The odds are definitely against us, but you'd never know unless you try.

The RISP Troopers come from somewhere...they don't just spring from the earth fully-formed. Everyone interested should apply.

Posted by: WA1DH

Any idea of how soon after the deadline closes they begin testing? I would be curious to know how much time I have to prepare if I were to apply.

Posted by: WA1DH

Pardon my ignorance, as I have never taken a PT test before. Are the sit ups performed with the elbows 'pointed' forward toward the knees? I have heard of other PT tests where the arms are locked out in a straight line with hands behind the head, and must break the plane with the knees coming up, but the RISP booklet says elbows must -touch- the knees.

I would have edited my last post but didn't see an option to. I apologize if this has been answered before.

Doug

No, no, no you got in wrong. Like Athena, MSP Troopers spring from the head of Zeus fully formed, armed and clothed in boots & breeches.

Posted by: CTrain

Kind of off topic, but has anyone else noticed that RI Troopers are often "huge friggin' guys"? Quite a few of them that I have seen sure have been, I'm no Tiny Tim but they were some big dudes

Pretty sure that it's no Mass Civil Service test... put it that way.

Posted by: CTrain

Well yes, I know that. But how does that make us (the posters in this thread) crybaby computer toughguys? Am I completely missing something here???

Posted by: 5-0

I think he meant that a majority of us are this:
I didn't know that the RISP test had a 90% fail to sit your ass in a chair rate though... LOL

He isn't hardcore like going through the academy but he doesn't take any shit he still has the trooper attitude and work ethic thats for sure and has very high expectations.

So any word yet on when the test actually is?

... or is it on the site, and I'm having a brain fart?

Just to comment on the "best of the best" commentary floating around. For those of you not from RI, RISP has been extremely successful in impressing on the public an image of perfection, utmost discipline, and extreme "no bullshitedness". They advertise as being absolutely a cut above the rest by a wide margin. Whether or not this is true can be up for debate. They are probably the most paramilitary (in the true sense of the word) state police organization in the country. Troopers salute their superiors all day. They come in all heights, but are all absolutely solid. They look like Marine Corps drill sgts, and I mean nearly ALL of them. In a state where corruption has run rampant through nearly all government departments including MANY PD's, the RISP have remained virtually impervious to that kind of behavior, even when it was endorsed by past mayors and governors. Their detective division is extremely squared away, constantly wiretapping drug rings, corrupt politicians and the mob. They work only with the AG and US Attorney - no city solicitor prosecutions. Their selection process is extremely vigorous, and competition is extreme to say the least. They are looking for people with nearly spotless backgrounds, that includes driving history and credit. Even if you do make it through the academy, you may still be placed on a reserve list. In RI you can always tell an off duty trooper by the way they stand and their build. Best of the best? Maybe. Totally different plane of LE? Definitely.
