Visit to home of missing girl was ‘disturbing’

Jennifer Fay . . . Disappeared on Nov. 14, 1989

ROCKLAND - The woman who authorities say once concocted a story that her ex-boyfriend tied her to a tree and raped her showed up this week at the home of a missing Brockton girl’s mother, claiming she knew who killed the teen.

Karen DeCosta, 55, of Revere appeared unannounced at the Rockland home of Dorothy MacLean, mother of Jennifer Fay, on Wednesday night and said her ex-boyfriend killed the girl and buried her in Weymouth.

MacLean called the woman’s hour-long, unannounced visit ‘‘disturbing.’’

‘‘I didn’t sleep too well last night. It was pretty upsetting,’’ she said.

MacLean said she initially thought the woman had information about her daughter, but then, after calling the team of private investigators working on the case, realized that it was a hoax.

‘‘She was using Jennifer to get back at this guy,’’ MacLean said.

Fay, who is feared dead, disappeared on Nov. 14, 1989, after leaving her Brockton home with friends. She was last seen on Broad Street in Brockton. A team of private investigators is working on the case, trying to learn what happened to the then-16-year-old girl.

One of the investigators, Philip White, called the visit by DeCosta ‘‘reprehensible.’’

‘‘To prey on a mother for your own case ... that is disgusting,’’ he said.

DeCosta is on trial in Brockton Superior Court on charges of attempting to commit a crime. She is accused of trying to hire someone to abduct her daughter from her ex-boyfriend, who has full custody of the child.

Judge Charles M. Grabau was made aware of DeCosta’s visit to MacLean’s home during a break in the trial Thursday. DeCosta was ordered to stay away from Fay’s family as a condition of her bail.

DeCosta’s lawyer, Kenneth Elias, said he first learned of his client’s visit to the missing girl’s home on Thursday morning.
Over the years, DeCosta has faced repeated charges of harassing her former boyfriend, who is now married, and police say she once concocted a story that he had raped her and tied her to a tree. That 2001 claim led police to arrest the man in the delivery room at Morton Hospital in Taunton as his wife was giving birth. The charge was later dropped.

In the current case, DeCosta is accused of trying to hire a man to abduct her daughter in 2005. The man was an undercover Raynham police officer.

BROCKTON — A woman who has faced repeated charges of harassing her former boyfriend was convicted Friday of trying to hire someone to abduct her daughter from him.

But she wasn't around to hear the verdict.

Karen DeCosta, 55, of Revere, left Brockton Superior Court for lunch as the jury deliberated — and never came back.

Now there's a warrant out for her arrest and her brother-in-law, who posted the $50,000 bail, is in danger of losing the money.

A hearing on whether the bail should be forfeited is set to be held Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. and authorities were out Friday trying to find DeCosta

The jury ate lunch and deliberated about two hours before convicting DeCosta of attempting to commit a crime, parental kidnapping.

The charge carries a sentence of up to five years in prison.

Judge Charles M. Grabau waited about a half hour for DeCosta to return to court before accepting the jury's verdict.

Assistant District Attorney Mark Dunderdale alleged in court that DeCosta tried to hire a man — who turned out to be an undercover Raynham police officer — to abduct her daughter in 2005.

She was arrested at that time in the parking lot of a liquor store on Route 44 in Lakeville.

The verdict came after DeCosta appeared unannounced Wednesday night at the Rockland home of Dorothy MacLean, mother of Jennifer Fay who went missing in 1989 in Brockton, claimed her ex-boyfriend had killed the girl and buried her in Weymouth.

As someone who knows a family of a missing/murdered girl...this is horrific, this sorry excuse should be charged with anything they can charge her with. Sick bitch.

Wanted woman back in custody

By Maureen Boyle, Enterprise staff writer

BROCKTON— The woman who never returned to court to learn she was convicted of trying to hire someone to abduct her daughter is back in custody.

Karen DeCosta, 55, of Revere was arrested in to Stoneham police Sunday morning, the day after someone recognized her and contacted authorities.

She was arrested by Stoneham police around 8 a.m. Sunday after she was found hiding in a closet at a home.

She could appear in Brockton Superior Court today or Tuesday for sentencing.

DeCosta was convicted last month of attempt to commit a crime, parental kidnapping. The charge carries a sentence of up to five years in prison.

She was convicted of trying to hire a man, who turned out to be an undercover Raynham police officer, to abduct her daughter in 2005. DeCosta's parental rights were terminated.

DeCosta, according to court papers filed at the time, said she once tried to hire a hit man to kill her ex-boyfriend, the father of her child, but the man took her cash instead.

DeCosta has faced repeated charges of harassing her ex-boyfriend, who has since remarried. He has full custody of the child.

In one instance, DeCosta claimed the Raynham man abducted and raped her. Those claims led police to arrest him while he was in the delivery room with his wife as she was giving birth at Morton Hospital and Medical Center. The charges were later dropped.

In a more recent case, two days before she was convicted of trying to hire someone to abduct her daughter, DeCosta appeared unannounced at the Rockland home of Dorothy MacLean, the mother of Jennifer Fay who was reported missing in 1989 in Brockton. DeCosta claimed her ex-boyfriend had killed the girl and buried her in Weymouth.

Investigators later interviewed DeCosta, but could find nothing to substantiate her claims.

A judge later ordered DeCosta to stay away from Jennifer Fay's family.
