Anyone else attending law school?

I'll be finishing up my masters in CJ at the end of the summer in 2008 and I just began calling around to the area law schools. I must of hit my head but I'm enjoying school in a weird way and I realize I'm not getting any younger. I'd be pursuing a law degree to build my resume and some day I'd like to be a chief. I'd also like to work on the side at a lawyer.

I'd like to start law school next fall and want to know other officer's input from programs they are currently in. I intend to keep on working full time at nights and attend either full time days or part time nights. Does anyone have any encouraging words of advice or words of warning for me?

I started law school two days after I graduated the academy. Looking back the timing was not the best but I got it done. My suggestion is to look at Suffolk and New England. Both are ABA accredited schools and offer night programs. There isnt too much difference between the day and night programs in terms of content but huge differences in terms of students. Night classes tend to be older students. The biggest challenge is sitting in class sometimes and listening to some lemming whine about how the police should have known that the gun was a toy or that some SOB wasnt going to hurt anyone. All in all law school helped me and I would do it all over again.

Thanks for your advice and input. Did you go full time, part time, days, or nights? I'm 36 years old so am I too old for day classes? Lastly, how long did it take you to complete law school? Full time takes what 3 years? Part time I suppose must take 4 years. Thanks again for your help.

I went nights so I was out in four years. You are never too old to go to the day division classes but most of the students are fresh out of college and dont have a clue about the real world. The other thing to look at is the cost. They are some programs for loan repayment if you go into public sector law, I dont know if police work counts, but it is tied to total income and that could put you out of the running.

Feel free to PM me if you have questions.

I just finished Mass School of Law in Andover last week and will be taking February's bar. The school is loaded with police officers and troopers from all over. It's not ABA accredited but you can still take the Mass bar and their diploma is accepted by all New England bars. No LSAT's, very flexible schedule for part & full timers. Lastly, school runs about 14k a year w/ books. Stafford Loans payable over 10 ears after graduation makes it a win/win. I just wish that I did it in 1987 instead of finishing in 2007! Best of luck! Their web site is www.msl.edu

Thanks for the post UncleMatt and everyone for their responses. I too am considering law school for many of the same reasons (and others). Taking the LSAT's in February and going from there.
