PORTSMOUTH, NH— A Gonic man who pleaded guilty Tuesday to hiding bologna in his pants for the purpose of stealing the luncheon meat, was sentenced to perform 40 hours of community service. Robert Baldwin, 35, pleaded guilty in Portsmouth District Court to a Class A misdemeanor charge of willful concealment. In exchange for his guilty plea, the prosecution agreed to place the charge on file without a finding for six months, pending his good behavior and the community service. Baldwin told the court the community service will be performed at the Port for one hour a week over a six-month period. During his Sept. 16 arraignment, Baldwin told the court he was intoxicated when he put a package of bologna in the waistband of his pants and hid it under the hooded sweatshirt he was wearing. He also said he "no knowledge" of the alleged theft due to his admitted intoxication. Prosecutor Corey MacDonald successfully petitioned the court for cash bail because Baldwin had a 30-day suspended jail sentence hanging over his head from a prior shoplifting conviction.
