Anyone know anything about this town/ Dept.? Size, pay, etc.

Posted by: JMB1977

from what I know...very small Department, little pay and single coverage during most night shifts. Alot of drinking followed by domestics in that little town.

Posted by: Chief Wiggins

Chief is a donkey...went to the academy with him, donkey then and from the officers I stay in contact with still a donkey. Has his own interpretation of the law. No idea about the town other than it is NOT union. My suggestion, get the ft academy under your belt and transfer.

Posted by: FLCOPZSPD

I am a FT. cop in FL. just been thinking about coming back up North. Doesn't seem like too many towns or cities in MA can match what I make plus take home cars. Just miss the change of seasons sometimes lol.

The posting in LEAPS actually requires F/T academy training. I don't know anyone with a F/T academy that would apply to this department. I work in the area and its a complete disaster. One or two of the P/T guys are cool but the Chief is a total fool. I am friends with a kid that was F/T out there. He was absolutely screwed over by the Chief. Great kid, did alot for that department like he brought in MDTs for the cruisers etc., just tried to make the place better and in the end he got hosed because the Chief was pissed he was friendly with other departments in the area. Questioned his loyalty or some BS. Not the only guy its happened to either. STAY AWAY FROM BROOKFIELD!!

FLCOPZSPD, my suggestion is try and network with guys in this area, you can definately make do, especially if you have a degree in CJ, and do not mind working extra, i.e. details. Just a thought, cost of living is quite a bit higher in this area. I do not know how Florida is but Mass is unionized and hopefully depending on the town/city contract just cause is needed for termination.

Send me a PM if you need any more insight.

Why wouldn't they offer the FT slot to one of their PTers first before posting it?

Posted by: Macop

I assume you would have to ask the Chief that.

Because they are looking for someone with a FT academy.

Posted by: Foxy85

21 Guys out of the the roughly 30 guys that went to that new shortened academy in Boylston (17 weeks I believe) didn't have jobs to goto after they went.....

Posted by: OutOfManyOne

Oh yes the new 15 weeks academy. People think that just because they have a FT academy they will get a job, not so in Massachusetts especially. They screwed themselves even worse because the shorter 15 weeks academy might not be transferable out of state, because it's not the minimum of 800 hrs usually required for POST.

Posted by: mpd61

Still though...
Several states will still acccept it. Montana, Colorado, Wyoming POST are all still only 10-12 weeks long.

Listen to our warnings, stay away from this place. Academy or no academy just stay away. Steve, good kid, good cop, just too bad he started out in this department. Got completely screwed by that chief. Don't make the same mistake he and other guys did, save your careers.

Posted by: Foxy85

How bad are we talking here? Is he a ball buster, whats so horrible about the guy....?

Posted by: FLCOPZSPD

Hey what's this about a shorter 15 week Mass. Police academy???

Posted by: j809

Candidates must be prepared to attend and fully participate in the fifteen (15) week police academy program· The first academy is scheduled to begin on July 30, 2007 at the Boylston Regional Police Academy, this is contingent upon enrollment
· The anticipated tuition fee for the academy is $2500. This figure could be increased to $2700 if changed in the state budget which should be approved by July 1, 2007
· Candidates must have successfully completed the Massachusetts Community College Law Enforcement Certificate Program and/or have a college degree in Criminal Justice from a regionally accredited institution(certified copies of transcripts and supporting documentation must accompany the LECP Academy Application)
· Candidates must have passed the Municipal Police Training Committee’s LECP Comprehensive Exam (a copy of the LECP certification or CJ degree will be required to take the Exam) Download LECP Entrance Exam Application · Candidates must be employed by a municipal police department or they must be sponsored by the Chief of Police of a municipal police department
· Candidates must meet all requirements for attending an MPTC police academy, including medical screening and evaluation and the successful completion of the Physical Agility Test (PAT)
· Candidates must be physically fit to fully participate in the rigorous training program which includes daily fitness training, defensive tactics training and situational role playing
· Candidates must complete all required applications and paperwork for the basic curriculum municipal police academy.
· Candidates who are sponsored by a municipal police chief must also complete the additional waiver and support forms and have them signed and notarized, as required

This 15 week academy bullshit is going to hurt this state and the departments over the years. With so much to know in this job field, they should increase the academy not decrease it. You don't see the State Police cutting back on their academy. I feel sorry for my fellow FTO's. I will soon find out what they have learned in 15 weeks with our new hire.

Posted by: sigarmz26

Foxy,
For starters he was made Chief 4 months outta the academy, no experience, no degree, he was the selectmens buddy. He hasn't done anything with the 10 yrs he's been on still no degree or anything, just riding the gravy train. He can't keep any officer there because he ends up screwing them. He's just a guy you absolutely can't trust, has his own interpretation of the laws, just a mess. Theres alot more but last time officers posted the truth about him he ended up calling their Chief crying and made a mess outta it. I don't wanna go there. Just stay away.

Sounds like a small town CLK

It is possible that the part-timers are only in it for the PT work and don't want to give up a FT gig somewhere else. Someone making a nice bit of change in a different field, who still craves doing some police work may not want to sacrifice a hefty paycheck.

Posted by: jettsixx

One of the latest things I read about him, was that after he gets another full time officer he's going to cut his part-time officers by five. Thats a nice thank you to the part timers that have carried that department over the years. Granted that is not entirely his fault a lot has to do with the budget.
