Teen charged with assaulting police By Tom Dalton Staff writer
SALEM - A Lynn teenager was charged with assaulting two police officers during the second of back-to-back disturbances on Mason Street early yesterday morning.
Police made their first trip to Mason and Oak streets shortly after midnight on a report of two people arguing in the street. Jarrod Devaney, 18, of 79 Bridge St., Salem, and Aaron Collins, 17, of 21 Rosemont St., Lynn, were sent on their way, after reportedly telling police they were friends.
Around 1:10 a.m., police were called back to Mason and Friend streets - which is a block away - on a report of a loud group in the street. They found the same two teenagers in the middle of the disturbance, apparently still arguing. Devaney was placed under arrest on a charge of disturbing the peace.
When police attempted to arrest Collins, however, he "threw an elbow and began swinging" at Patrolman Dana Mazola, according to a police report. As Collins continued throwing punches at Mazola and Patrolman Ryan Davis, backup units were called to the scene, police said.
Collins was arrested on charges of disturbing the peace, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and two counts of assault and battery on a police officer. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment yesterday in Salem District Court. Staff reporter Julie Manganis contributed to this article.
