PEABODY - After motorists spent their mornings yesterday chipping the ice off their windows, the real work began: driving on slippery roads. Police and firefighters reported dozens of spinouts, slips and falls - and, yes, motor vehicle crashes - on roads across the North Shore. The most serious crash happened on Interstate 95 near the Forest Street overpass, when firefighters had to use vehicular extraction tools to remove a Woburn woman from a pickup truck she was driving. The pickup truck rolled over in the crash, which emergency personnel said was the result of slick wintry weather. One Peabody fire engine and another ladder truck responded to the accident near Exit 45 shortly before 9 a.m. and found the black Ford Ranger on its side, said Peabody Deputy fire Chief Richard Nelson. Firefighters cut the roof off the vehicle to remove driver Lisa Primeau, who was taken to Salem Hospital with head and back injuries, Nelson said. She was alone in the truck at the time of the accident. Primeau's condition was not available from Salem Hospital last night. Her crash was hardly unique yesterday. "There were a dozen motor vehicle accidents related to ice," Nelson said. Along with Peabody, Salem, Beverly and Danvers also reported numerous crashes yesterday morning. The surrounding towns reported no accidents except for a minor two-car crash on Essex Street in Hamilton. Another crash in Peabody at 5:15 a.m., hours before the I-95 crash, knocked down a utility pole on Waselchuck Drive, though no injuries were reported. At one point in Salem, there were four reported crashes within a 15-minute span, beginning at 9:54 a.m., yet none involved any injuries. Icy conditions also caused buses to get stuck on Donegal Road in Peabody and Nichols Street in Salem. Emergency personnel also responded to about a dozen additional calls for people falling on ice, he said. Staff writer Bruno Matarazzo Jr. contributed to this report.
