Manager Says She Ran After Suspects

SALEM, N.H. -- A pet store manager foiled the attempted theft of a pricey exotic bird Friday, police said.

Sea World Pet Center manager Joanne Leone said that she was immediately suspicious of a man and a woman who entered the store Friday night. She said they were acting suspiciously as they walked up and down the aisles.

"The next time I saw them, she was walking down the center aisle clearly with something under her jacket," Leone said.

Police said the item was a bird worth $1,300. Darlene Maldonado, of Methuen, Mass., and Edwin Burgos, 21, of Lawrence, Mass., were charged in connection with the robbery.

"(The bird) probably would have died after they got it," Leone said. "They had a little tiny cage in the car so old they don't make them anymore. It was that small, and that's what she had wedged in the floor of the car."

Leone said she chased the two from the store to their car, held the door open with her foot and stopped Maldonado from driving off.

"So we struggled for some time until she started yelling to somebody, and he came over and started grabbing my neck and yanked me backwards so that she could drive the car away," Leone said.

Leone said she screamed and bystanders came to her aid, including police who arrived shortly after. Leone said the birds can be sold on the black market.

"I guess the money on the street is a big turnover," she said. "It's just one of those things. They're not stealing jackets or pumps; they're stealing animals that can die."

Maldonado and Burgos have been released on $1,000 bail.
