A local man may be facing federal charges for allegedly aiming a laser beam at a state police chopper. “As you can imagine, there are concerns when a laser hits an aircraft like this because you don’t know what is on the other end of it,” said Sgt. Robert Bousquet of the Massachusetts State Police. A state police helicopter was guiding a liquified natural gas tanker as it approached shore at about 9:15 p.m. Saturday when an eagle-eyed crew member noticed a laser was pointed at them. “The crew was able to determine an area of origin for the laser beam and a search took place,” Bousquet said. Cops from Medford and Somerville, state police troopers and U.S. Coast Guard officers darted into action and found a suspect more than an hour later near the Medford-Somerville line, police said. “He was identified and his information has been forwarded to federal authorities for potential charges of ‘illuminating an aircraft,’ ” Bousquet added. He said neither the aircraft nor the tanker was in any danger. “The troopers that we have are extremely well trained and maintained control of the aircraft at all times,” he said. The suspect has not been named.
