CHICOPEE, MASSACHUSETTS (WWLP) There are 555 students at the Westover Job Corps Center on Johnson Road in Chicopee, but there may be fewer names on that roster after this stabbing investigation is over. The school day was just winding down at the Westover Job Corps Center in Chicopee when two male students began to fight. By the time it was over, one man had been stabbed and another ran away. Hours later, drops of blood still dot the floor in the campus safety and security office where the victim ran for help.
Mike Riley, Job Corps Center Director, said, "We're very structured and we're very disciplined and we have very strict policies. Unfortunately, like in any program, you're going to have incidents. It's a good thing that it seems to be very minor; you know a pencil or pen was used---a couple of kids had an altercation."
The victim suffered a wound in his right abdomen. Chicopee police arrested 18-year-old student Daniel Carrero of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Police charged Carrero with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
22News asked student Ruben Santiago if he felt safe at the school. He said, "Yes, actually, I do..."
Job Corps administrators say the altercation happened outside the building around 4 o'clock, just as classes were letting out for the weekend.
"After we do an investigation and find out all the information, students that were involved will probably be separated from the program."
The director says the Job Corps center is a place for students looking to turn their lives around and has a zero tolerance policy for drugs and violence. Although we don't know the exact condition of the victim in this case, his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
