ROCKLAND - Police Chief John Llewellyn’s Friday afternoon turned out frigid after the chief partially fell through the ice of Reed’s Pond while rescuing a dog.
At 2:30 p.m. Friday, the police department received a 911 call reporting that a dog had broken through the ice on the pond.
Llewellyn and Animal Control Officer Patti Whittemore arrived on the scene at Earl Street 10 to 15 minutes after the dog fell in. The chief pushed a small rowboat onto the ice, but as he did so he fell into the pond, too.
Once back in the boat, the chief ‘‘paddled the boat to the dog, breaking ice along the way,’’ according to Rockland police.
After about 10 minutes, he rescued the dog, and the canine and Llewellyn were in turn pulled to shore by police officers and firefighters.
The dog was reunited with its owner, and the chief, after a precautionary test for hypothermia, is fine.
