Local babysitter accused of abusing 4-month-old

LYNN, Mass. -- A babysitter is accused of shaking a 4-month-old baby boy until his brain bled.
The baby's mother said her child was calm and smiling when she dropped him off at her babysitter's, Betsy Mira, apartment at 8 a.m. on November 28.
Police were called to the home around 10:30 a.m. and found the child unresponsive.
The infant was taken to the North Shore Children's Hospital where he was treated for bleeding in the brain, an injury that can be caused by shaken baby syndrome.
Mira, 27, denies harming the infant.
She was arraigned on Friday for assault and battery charges. Mira was released on $3,000 cash bail but has been ordered to stay away from the victim and stop babysitting any other children.
Mira is a native of El Salvador, and lives in the apartment with her boy friend and two-year-old child. She has only lived in the states for three years.
The child has been released from the hospital, but will require further observation.
