Authorities: Accused dealer managed to get drugs into jail

PLYMOUTH - Prison posed no obstacle to drug possession for an accused drug dealer awaiting trial, corrections officials say.

Carlos J. Lebron, 28, of Forest Avenue Extension, Plymouth, is in jail on $10,000 bail waiting to be tried on charges of distributing cocaine and heroin near a school or park in Plymouth.

State Police charged Lebron in October of 2006.

Despite strip searches, officials said Lebron, in March, had five packets of powdered cocaine, according to court documents. The packets were in folded-up pieces of paper and hidden in a coffee creamer packet, the documents state.

Lebron pleaded innocent to cocaine possession last week in Plymouth District Court and was released back to the Plymouth County House of Correction. His case was continued to Jan 8.

Corrections officers found the cocaine and five pills during a search of Lebron’s cell, authorities reported.

Lebron left his box of belongings in his cell instead of packing them up before his court date, jail spokesman John Birtwell said.

‘‘Since there is always the possibility that they will be released from court, they must pack up their belongings before they go unless we know ahead of time that they’re coming back,’’ Birtwell said. ‘‘It saves processing time, but there is no expectation of privacy in jail. Corrections officers can search cells at any time.’’

Lebron first said the powder was crushed Seraquel, a sleeping medication. The pills were identified as Seraquel, but testing showed that powder was cocaine, according to court documents.

Lebron did not have a prescription for Seraquel. Only one inmate in the jail had a Seraquel prescription, court documents state.

Birtwell said Lebron likely got the cocaine during a previous courthouse trip and somehow smuggled it into the jail despite the strip and body-cavity searches that were done when he returned.

‘‘Folks in here have lots of time to dream up ways to beat the system, and sometimes they do,’’ Birtwell said. ‘‘We sporadically search cells, sectors and the whole jail so no one gets too confident. Sometimes we search with dogs, sometimes just (with) personnel.’’
Lebron’s offense was an isolated incident and not part of an overall drug-smuggling scheme, ‘‘although it looks like (Lebron) could have traded cocaine for the other inmate’s Seraquel,’’ Birtwell said.
