OAKLAND PARK, Fla. --
A man posing as a police K-9 handler walked out on the tab at an Oakland Park eatery after boasting to the staff about helping in the search for the man accused of killing a Broward Sheriff's Office deputy, according to the BSO.
Employees at Johnny's Fuci-Fino Bar said a man wearing a black police shirt with the word "Sheriff" on it walked into the eatery about 11 a.m. Nov. 7, the same day BSO detention Deputy Paul Rein was shot and killed.
According to witnesses, the man identified himself as an off-duty K-9 police officer who was working on the apprehension of Michael Mazza, the escaped inmate accused of killing Rein.
The man ate and drank for a period of almost three hours and rang up a tab totaling $59.05. During that time, he boasted to patrons and bar staff about his helping in the massive search for Mazza, according to the BSO.
He told people in the bar that he was going to check on his police dog and mentioned to the bartender that his firearm was in his backpack, asking the bartender to keep an eye on it.
When he never returned, bartenders opened the backpack and found a BSO criminal registrant card, a booking report and a Fort Lauderdale police report. All of the documents involved Darrel Wieland, who was later identified by witnesses as the man in the bar.
According to the BSO, Wieland, 32, also skipped out on a bill at a Fort Lauderdale restaurant Nov. 28. Wieland's last known address was 3300 NE 36th St. in Fort Lauderdale, but he no longer resides there, the BSO said.
Wieland is believed to go by the alias of Timothy James Corbett. He is about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs about 170 pounds with tattoos of jump wings on his right arm and a Playboy bunny on his left arm.
He faces several charges, including falsely impersonating a law enforcement officer and petit theft.
Anyone with information about Wieland's whereabouts is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
