Associated Press - December 5, 2007 10:44 AM ET WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) - Waterbury police are investigating what appears to be a murder-suicide involving two former brothers-in-law. A passer-by found the body of James VanRoo hanging from a bridge yesterday. An autopsy this morning is expected to determine the cause of death, but police say the 67-year-old Waterbury resident likely killed himself. Police say they soon found inside a nearby van a man with his throat slashed. He was identified as 53-year-old Michael Mudgett, also of Waterbury. Mudgett and VanRoo were brothers-in-law until VanRoo divorced Mudgett's sister. Mudgett had cerebral palsy and used a wheelchair. Police say VanRoo was his primary caregiver, and that he apparently killed Mudgett and took his own life. Police say severe financial problems may have been a factor.
