PLYMOUTH - School officials sent a phone alert to all parents after a Manomet girl reported that a man tried to lure her into his truck Tuesday morning.
The girl told police that a black man in his 30s wearing a Patriots jersey and driving a silver pickup truck stopped and offered her a ride, School Superintendent Barry Haskell said.
Police Capt. Michael Botieri said the girl was about 12 and a middle school student.
Police officers ‘‘will be driving by bus stops around town for the next few days,’’ Botieri said.
Haskell used the school department’s ‘‘School Reach’’ service to notify parents at 5 and 7 p.m. Tuesday. The phone message was sent to the parents of all children in the school system, he said.
‘‘We wanted to alert everyone and remind them to talk to their children about taking rides from strangers or known people without a previous arrangement,’’ Haskell said. ‘‘We timed the message to get parents as they were sitting down to dinner. Since the man was in a truck and could drive anywhere, we decided to notify all parents rather than those in just the Manomet area.’’
The phone-message system can be used to send alerts to specific groups or district-wide, Haskell said. It is used in emergencies, when school is canceled, and to announce important events.
