WAREHAM — The Wareham Police Department is accepting applications for seasonal police to help control crowds who flock to the area in summer.
Police Chief Thomas A. Joyce hopes to hire 20 to 25 officers, mostly to patrol downtown and beach areas, from June to Sept. 1.
Officers will not be hired until after the spring Town Meeting, when the budget is determined and the Police Department finds out how much money it has to spend on seasonal officers.
Last year, there was no money to hire extra officers, and the lack of police presence caused problems in Onset village, officials said.
"Most of it is just public nuisance behavior," Chief Joyce said, citing noise, blocked sidewalks, loitering and littering as the main complaints.
Although it is too early to say whether sufficient funds will be made available to the Police Department this spring, Chief Joyce is hoping for the best.
"I think everybody is going to try real hard to help us get that funding," he said.
Another concern is whether the department will find space in training programs to prepare the officers for duty.
Preference will be given to applicants who have experience as permanent or reserve officers.
Applicants must be at least 21, have a high school diploma or GED, possess a current Massachusetts driver's license and be capable of obtaining and maintaining a license to carry firearms.
Applications are being accepted until 3 p.m. Dec. 28 and can be picked up at the Wareham Police Department on Cranberry Highway.

Not a bad department to get some experience without having to travel to the end of the Cape.
