By Joao Ferreira SouthCoastToday.com December 05, 2007 9:28 AM NEW BEDFORD — City detectives Tuesday night arrested three individuals they say are responsible for 90 percent of the recent armed robberies in the city and Dartmouth. The arrests came following an investigation, said Lt. Jeffrey Silva, New Bedford Police spokesman. Arrested were Jonathan Oberg, 20, of Edmonton, Ky., who faces five counts of armed robbery while masked and five counts of confining or putting a person in fear for stealing; Joshua J. DaSilva, 18, of 32 Templeton St., New Bedford, who faces two counts of armed robbery while masked; and Adam J. Simmons, 18, of 3 Fielding St., New Bedford, who faces three counts of armed robbery while masked. Lt. Silva said the new suspects are allegedly connected to 90 percent of the recent armed robberies in the area. Before the arrests, police said a series of five armed robberies in New Bedford and Dartmouth had similarities and might have been connected. In those robberies, a white man armed with a knife threatened to stab the store clerks unless they opened their cash registers. Witnesses said the suspect was 5 feet, 5 inches tall. Before Tuesday night’s arrests, New Bedford police had already arrested a suspect in two of those robberies: Michael Hammerle, 43, who is charged with one count of armed robbery at Walgreens pharmacy at 1091 Kempton St. Some of the recent robberies include the Tedeschi’s Food Mart at 450 Ashley Boulevard, the 7-Eleven at 1389 Phillips Road and the Cumberland Farms at 810 Rockdale Ave. on Oct. 31, as well as a Nov. 3 armed robbery at Summit Grove Laundry in Dartmouth. More details expected to follow.
