Somerset - In a season for giving, Police Chief Joseph C. Ferreira must be particularly gratified.
Friday, Ferreira announced that he, his department and the people of Somerset have raised $3,400 for the Jimmy Fund through the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk and other fundraising measures.
“We definitely recognized some of the people who helped raise the funds,” Ferreira said, adding that it was a town-wide effort.
It was also an effort very specific to police chiefs throughout the commonwealth.
“Ferreira said that every year “Team Police Chiefs” is organized — an umbrella group comprising police chiefs all over Massachusetts who set to work raising funds.
The chiefs, and those they involve, walk in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk and set up other fundraising activities.
“There are 77 communities involved through their chiefs,” Ferreira said.
While competition isn’t the name of the game in this charity fundraising effort, the chiefs are certainly aware of who raises the most money.
“The $3,400 we raised this year puts us in first place for Team Police Chiefs,” Ferreira said.
He said the four-pronged effort that raised the $3,400 shows the true community-wide nature of the fund-raising effort.
“First of all, I did send letters to previous donors,” Ferreira said.
During Somerset Celebrates, area well-knowns took pies in the face for the effort.
There was a dunk tank at the same event and canisters for money collection were placed at various locations around town, including banks and stores.
Since its founding in 1948, the Jimmy Fund has supported the fight against cancer in children and adults at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, helping to raise the chances of survival for cancer patients around the world.
