Blue light special sells an arrest

Who among us hasn’t dreamed of this: Trapped in commuter traffic, you flip on some emergency lights, play policeman and watch the slowpokes part before you.

Faking it all the way, you’re home before the TV news is over – unless you run afoul of the real police.
Thursday evening, Washington State Patrol troopers arrested a 25-year-old Tacoma man who they said used flashing blue lights on his car to get through traffic on Interstate 5.

The man was booked into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of impersonating an officer. His late-model Ford Mustang was impounded.

His troubles started about 4:20 p.m. when another driver called 911 to report a Mustang – flashing blue lights in the front grill and a blue light around the rear bumper – was heading north on I-5 near Mounts Road, the State Patrol reported.
The Mustang’s driver appeared to be trying to get through traffic, said the witness, who gave dispatchers a description of the car and its license plate number.

Troopers in the area were alerted and one spotted the Mustang on the freeway at Highway 512. With the help of another trooper, he stopped the Mustang at the 72nd Street exit in Tacoma, the State Patrol reported.

The driver was arrested and later told troopers the lights and a siren were “just for show,” the State Patrol reported.
An inspection of the Mustang revealed a long blue light mounted in the car’s grill. A switch mounted near the driver’s right leg activated the light, which flashed several random patterns. The same switch also turned on the rear blue lights.

Mounted between the center console and the driver’s seat was a “control head” that – when activated – produced several loud tones that could be broadcast through a speaker in the front of the Mustang, the State Patrol reported.

The tones closely resembled the sounds of a police vehicle siren, the State Patrol said.

A records check revealed the Mustang was the focus of another 911 call on Nov. 19 when a witness reported seeing a car with flashing blue lights, the State Patrol reported.
