A state trooper suffered serious injuries early yesterday morning when a minister’s allegedly drunken daughter slammed into the back of his cruiser with an SUV.
Sunday school teacher Candace Player, 27, of Spaulding Street, Quincy, was arrested after the horrific crash near Exit 23 on Interstate 93 north in the Thomas P. O’Neill Tunnel.
The trooper, whose name was not released, had been dealing with a minor crash and was about to leave the scene when, it is alleged, Player’s 2005 Mazda Tribute plowed into the back of his vehicle at about 3:15 a.m.

“It has broken our hearts. We are devastated,” said Player’s father, the Rev. Michael F. Player, who said he was called by cops to collect his daughter from custody early yesterday.
“I don’t know how this happened because this is not her lifestyle. Maybe she had been to a party. I don’t know,” he said.

“She doesn’t live like this. She was terribly upset when I brought her home at 5 o’clock this morning. She has never been in any trouble in her life.”

The Rev. Player said his daughter teaches Sunday school at the Christian Church of North America in Somerville.

“We are praying that the state trooper is going to be OK and that everything is fine,” he added.

The trooper was taken by ambulance to New England Medical Center.

“His injuries are serious but not life-threatening,” said state police spokesman Trooper Thomas Murphy, who would not elaborate on the extent of the officer’s injuries.
Troopers called to the scene arrested Player on suspicion of operating under the influence after observing her behavior, Murphy said.

Player lives with her family at their Quincy home. She is due to be arraigned at Boston Municipal Court tomorrow on charges of operating under the influence and a marked lane violation, police said.

Best wishes on a full and speedy recovery Troopah.

On a side note -- I've heard that excuse plenty of times from parents.

I'm sure they'll hit her hard with a CWOF for 6 months and $625 in fees.

Attorneys: Driver was 3 times legal alcohol limit

A Quincy Sunday school teacher who gave a state trooper severe whiplash when her SUV crashed into his cruiser had a blood alcohol level almost three times the legal limit and blacked out during the late-night wreck, attorneys said.
Candace Player, 27, who was in court yesterday with her minister father and her mother, had been partying at “The Place” in downtown Boston early Sunday morning and told police she had four drinks there, a prosecutor said during her arraignment yesterday.
Player was charged in Boston Municipal Court with operating under the influence of alcohol and causing serious bodily injury for allegedly causing the 3:15 a.m. crash inside the Thomas P. O’Neill Jr. Tunnel in Boston. She was released on personal recognizance.
Trooper John Staco, who was wearing a neck brace, suffered back and neck injuries when Player’s SUV struck his cruiser from behind. Staco had parked his cruiser in the third travel lane to assist with a minor accident.
“It did catch me off guard,” Staco, a 24-year state police veteran, said from his home yesterday.
Staco, who spent Sunday in the hospital, doesn’t know when he can return to work.
Suffolk Assistant District Attorney Angela McConney said when another trooper approached Player’s SUV, her eyes were glassy, she smelled of booze and she stumbled when she stepped out of the car. At the police station, she asked to take a Breathalyzer test and both tests showed she had a .22 blood alcohol level, McConney said. The legal limit in Massachusetts is .08.
Player’s attorney, A. Anthony Guadalupe, implied that his client was a novice drinker.
“Ironically, she doesn’t drink,” he said. “She doesn’t have any memory of what happened.”
Player, who lives in Quincy, was ordered not to drive and not to drink alcohol and must report once a week to a probation officer. Player and her parents, the Rev. Michael Player and Constance Player, declined comment.

The facts would tend to contradict your statement here, counsel...

I hope the trooper makes a speedy recovery and her excuse of not typically drinking sounds just like the idiots that always say " I only had one drink officer."

I would be willing to bet that a non-drinker would be passed out at .22

I believe its pronounced "Aw-si-ver". Usually followed by "are you gonna give me an alkalizer test."

"someone spiked my virgin margarita with alchohol"

I hate the excuses the family and lawyer are making... does it really matter if she doesn't drink? The fact is she did drink, got behind the wheel and caused an accident. Thank God the trooper is ok... we don't need any more lives ruined by idiots who plow into the rear of cruisers while drunk.

I'm sure she was. It just so happened that the vehicle was in drive and her foot was on the gas.
