Bumbling scam left cops a map

A Henrietta man trying to collect on a fraudulent insurance claim shouldn't have left MapQuest directions in his abandoned car that would lead police back to his house.

Craig C. Wilson, 36, of Alfie Drive was sentenced Monday in Monroe County Court to five years' probation for trying to obtain a fraudulent $10,282 insurance payment, according to Rochester police and the state Insurance Department.
Wilson traveled to Florida and then abandoned his 2002 Mercury Mountaineer in the parking lot of a Jacksonville apartment complex. He later reported the vehicle stolen, officials said.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and Rochester police were able to figure out what happened — and track down Wilson — partly because he left directions from MapQuest, the Internet mapping service, in the vehicle for a trip from his home to Jacksonville, said Rochester police Officer Deidre Taccone.
Authorities also found paperwork in the sport utility vehicle detailing Wilson's airline travel from Jacksonville back to Rochester, Taccone said.

Wilson was arrested by Rochester police on May 30, Taccone said, about six months after he reported the vehicle stolen.
The abandoned SUV was discovered when the apartment complex owner complained about it to police, officials said.

Wilson pleaded guilty to insurance fraud Sept. 17.
The Frauds Bureau of the state Insurance Department received 22,884 reports of suspected insurance fraud in 2006, said department spokesman Ron Klug. Bureau investigations led to 604 arrests last year, he said. The investigation of Wilson's fraudulent claim was conducted by the Insurance Department, the Rochester police and the Geico insurance company.
