LOS ANGELES -- Emmett Badar joined the Lost Angeles Police Department 36 years ago. Three years ago, his daughter Janell joined him on the force. "How do I tell her, 'This is not what I want you to do,'" said Emmett Badar. "Do I have that internal thing that you always have -- worry, concern? Naturally. I try not to display it too much." Both are assigned to Central Division, which is in one of the city's toughest neighborhoods. Emmett Badars works homicide. Janell Badar works patrol. Janell Badar said she puts her father's advice into practice on patrol. "He feels everyone should be treated the same and equally and everyone should be given respect," Janell Badar said. "Even though you may look at the people on the streets and say, 'Where do they live? What are they doing?' They're making their way and it's our job to make their way safe." For the past 20 years, Detective Badar has worked hundreds of murder cases. He said he never forgets that victims leave behind families. "That is so important, to remember no matter who they are or what their background is, they belong to somebody," he said. Emmett Badar will retire this week. He said retirement will improve his relationship with his daughter's dating prospects. "A lot of folks around here know her dad, and they maybe stand a foot away, 'Oh, that's Detective Badar's daughter,'" said the detective. Janell Badar said she is "anxious" to continue the job without her father. "I'm kind of a little anxious to stand on my own with my dad gone, and be able to build my own identity, but he's been good," Janell Badar said. "To me, he's left a good name so I'm so proud to wear his badge."
