PETERSBURG, Mich. -- An intruder shot and killed a German shepherd during a break-in at a Monroe County business where dogs are trained for police work. According to sheriff's investigators, a 22-year-old former employee of World K-9 Inc. broke into the owner's adjacent home near Petersburg on Sunday night around 8:40 p.m. Police said the man entered through an unlocked bedroom window. When a 14-year-old boy spotted the robber, the man opened fire on the dog. The German shepherd was standing between them. The German Shepard was in between the three and before they could lay on the floor to comply with his demands, he shot the dog, said Monroe County Sheriffs Department Sgt. Rick Galimberti. Deputies said the intruder found the boy's 65-year-old grandfather outside the house, pinned him down and stole his money. The robber re-entered the house and took some of the man's medication. Police said the 22-year-old wore a hood during the robbery, but the homeowner recognized his voice. The younger man had worked there for about two months. He was arrested about three hours later in Monroe, along with an alleged accomplice. World K-9 had 28 dogs on the property, most of them in outbuildings. The dog that was shot stayed in the house. No family members, including the homeowner's wife, were physically injured.
