Man.. Fast and furious on hiring huh.
The DOC has been hiring steadily for at least 2-3 years right? Have there been a lot of retirees lately?

I think a lack of qualified applicants is the culprit; I remember they extended the deadline for the last exam.

Granted the working conditions leave a lot to be desired, but the pay is decent with health insurance & state benefits; I would definitely take the test if I were just starting out.

Iam I reading it correctly on HRD website that they have already announced another CO1 exam and the scores for the sept 2007 have not even come out yet.

I know only about 75 people showed up in quincy for it. The DOC must be very desperate. Anyone know why no one is taking the job or why officers are quitting?

Posted by: WaterPistola

and what might be the pay?

Posted by: CodeBlue1970

Now is the card you just received for the last test on sept 29th 2007?

goodluck

Number of factors...Qualified applicants for sure. For CPO's, they have never hit the target for recruiting. CO's, a bunch quit just in the academy alone. Then, even though you sign the assignment waiver, people get a "bad" assignment and they quit or don't show.

Then, after talking to some, it's a matter of doing thier time until something better comes along. Then finally, retirements and the mass-exodus that appears to be forthcoming. Depending on your perspective, $40k (roughly) base may or may not be all that much or worth it.

I talk to DOC transport guys all the time, and they say its what you make of it, just like any other job. But he showed me a pay stub, and they make some good coin. He had been on forever, but his base salary maxed out was just over 2200 bi weekly( I'm not sure how many steps they have till they max out). Then they get roll call pay, oodles of O.T., etc.....you can make a good living at D.O.C.

Posted by: WaterPistola

transport comes after doing your time in the prisons right?

Posted by: Foxy85

I would imagion that that is the case....

Posted by: HELPMe

You get my respect for doing the job but watching prisoners give each other bjs in the shower is not my idea of great working conditions.

I think it's a combination of PD's hiring a lot in the last few years as the Vietnam vets retire, and also a generally good economy where a CS state job is not as attractive as it was compared to the private sector 10+ years ago.

Posted by: Otto

I know WCSO is having a really hard time getting qualified applicants, also.

Posted by: Foxy85

lol that might open a can of worms.....

Posted by: gruntled

The problem with the D.O.C. hiring procedure now is that the recruits don't know where they're going until graduation. I knew one kid who lives in Athol who got assigned to Walpole.
When I got hired back in 1991 you checked-off which institutions you wanted to work at when you took the civil service test. If you scored high enough and your choice of institutions was hiring you got hired. Now it's a crap shoot.

Posted by: jj1979

Gruntled,

forgive my ignorance on the subject. I just took the september test and I am waiting to begin the hiring process. You are given your assignments at graduation? Where you live plays no part in where you get assigned? Is your assigment based completely on where the DOC needs Corrections Officers?
Thanks

Posted by: Sniper

How long till they can work details in the city ?????

Posted by: gruntled

jj,
They send you where ever they need you. However, if there are openings in multiple institutions they will assign you based on your preference according to seniority. By that I mean that if you wanted to go to Shirley and the D.O.C. intends to fill a vacany at Shirley and you chose Shirley as one of your prefered sites and nobody with a higher academy score chose Shirley then you might go there. Otherwise you go where they need you.

Posted by: WaterPistola

tangent question. what does your academy score consist of? PAT times? test scores in the academy i presume?

Posted by: gruntled

Your academy score consists of an average of all your quizzes and test test scores.
This score will follow you for your entire career. Everything at the institutions is done by seniority. Your shift and days off, your vacation weeks your personal days etc. For those purposes your D.O.C. start date, the day you start the academy, is your seniority date. In the event of a tie, for instance you and a classmate wind up at the same joint and you both bid on the same shift\day off the tie breaker will be your civil service score. If that's a tie then your academy score is the tie breaker.
But for placement preference out of the academy it's your academy score.

What does the PAT consist of ?

What does the PAT consist of ?

UnderDOD,

If you go to the state website
www.mass.gov/doc.

Go under recruitment and it will show you a link to the actual test they use. Its appears they have styled it more as an occupational style test and gotten away from the cooper test. You have to run on a treadmill at a timed pace. drag a dummy stuff like that. I took the september test and am waiting to be called.

A friend of mine is taking this exam....does anyone know if there is a test prep course being offered?

Posted by: SargeLorenzo

I don't see anything about a test prep course. I took it, the test was very similiar to the PO and Fire tests. Otherwise, there were several parts where they showed charts of different info/rules/laws and they would ask Q's, pretty easy.

EXAMINATION CONTENT: The written examination will be designed to test, where practicable, the following abilities which have been established as qualifications for the position: ability to gather information through examining records and documents and through observing and questioning individuals; ability to read, understand, explain and apply the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards, guidelines, and instructions/post orders governing assigned unit activities; ability to write concisely and accurately to extract facts, express thoughts clearly, and develop ideas in logical order for incident, disciplinary, climate, and other general report writing; ability to work accurately with names, numbers, codes and/or symbols, in order to communicate via two-way radios and issue keys and equipment via chit system; ability to analyze and determine the applicability of quantitative and qualitative data such as demographic breakdowns, meal counts, and activity counts, in order to draw conclusions, identify trends or problems, and make appropriate recommendations; ability to maintain accurate records in Inmate Management System (IMS), record books, and logs to track inmates, supplies, and movement of equipment, vehicles, and inmates to ensure accountability and security.

I signed up for the exam for the 22nd of this comming March, as far as where they put me, I really dont care. I signed up for this knowing that I may have to travel long distance to work, I guess I dont understand these guys that go through the whole process and when it comes time to actually be placed into an institution, they bail. Seems kinda pointless to me, also it wastes the instructors time and takes chances away from guys that are actually willing to go the whole way to get the job. Im really looking forward to it and hopefully I do well. If you guys got any pre exam suggestions feel free to let me know. Take care.

Every place needs alot of people, i don't think its just walpole....

A Cpt. told me there are down nearly 2,000...Thats Two thousand guys state wide, it wasn't a typo....Not sure how true that is, but if thats the case, the hiring process will be never ending...

Plus he said after this contract is expired...eg 3 years.....you will see even more guys getting out (retiring)....
