The city dedicated a refurbished playground in Brooklyn to a fallen member of the Police Department today.
The family of the slain detective gathered as The Parade Ground Playground in Prospect Park was renamed Detective Dillon Stewart Playground. The playground recently underwent a $1.5 million renovation.
Stewart, who grew up in Brooklyn, was shot and killed two years ago while trying to stop a car for a traffic violation in East Flatbush.
"We're hoping that at some point, a child will turn to his or her parent here at the playground and say, ‘Mommy, why was this playground named the Dillon Stewart Playground?’ And we're hoping the parent will explain it and the children will understand that our police officers are truly the people that protect us,” said Community Board #14 Chairman Alvin Berk.
"Detective Stewart was somebody very well-loved by the people in this community,” said Tupper Thomas, president, Prospect Park Alliance. “He had done an amazing job of keeping people safe here.”
Allen Cameron, who was convicted of killing Stewart, was sentenced to life without parole earlier this month.
