Chinese "Superfighter" J-10

The PLAAF (People's Liberation Army-Air Force) has begun fielding the Chengdu J-10, their first truly indigenous multi-role fighter. This represents a significant step forward in air-superiority and ground attack capability to the PLAAF, who have traditionally used either Russian-designed aircraft or variations thereof. It give the PLAAF beyond-visual range interception, dogfighting and ground attack capability on par with many western-designed planes. It also is an alternative to second-and-third world countries who often look to the cheap Russian fighter market. The Chinese also plan to build a naval variant of the aircraft.

Bottom line, against the new US-made F-22's and F-35's, the J-10 probably represents little threat in an air-to-air environment (the J-10 lacks any stealth characteristics). Against Europe's Dassault Rafale's, Saab Gripen's or Eurofighters the J-10 is slightly greater threat, but probably still manageable. Against older warplanes like the F-15, F-16, FA-18, or the Tornado, the J-10 represents a more credible threat, where our technological superiority is less pronounced, although the US's significant combat experience and training would still give us a distinct advantage.

The J-10 also is a threat to other countries in the Pacific region who employ older US and European aircraft, but lack our combat experience, like Japan (F-15J's, FSX's), South Korea (F-16's, F-5's), Taiwan (F-16's) and Philippines (no fighter capability). The J-10 is also favorably compares to the MIG-29's, Su-30's and Mirage 2000's employed by India.

I just ran "Chengdu" through Babelfish for a translation;

"Easy pickings for US Air Force".

Looks like a Chinese knock-off of the EuroFighter. I wonder if the pilots wear knock-off Adidas shoes too.
