Don't worry Killjoy, you're not the only military history dork here. I read in an air power edition of Sea Classics about the switch to the F/A-18 platform for both fighter and attack planes, with the major reason being interchangability of parts, ease of maintenance, etc. It makes perfect sense if you think about it, and also reduces the chance of a mechanic on his 18th hour of work putting the wrong part into the wrong plane. |
| The F/A-18 is an adequete replacement for the A-7s the Navy. However the F/A-18 is debatable in the Replacement of the F-14 as a long range inteceptor fighter, it doesn't have as much range as an F-14 would. I tend to agree that the F/A-18 has done well in replacing the A-6 in the attack role. |
