Brits model anti-gang plan on Hub success

Scotland Yard is modeling a new gang-busting initiative in London on “Operation Ceasefire,” a Boston-based program that led to the vaunted Boston Miracle in the 1990s, the BBC reported yesterday.
Metropolitan Police are also inviting seven gang leaders to warn them that the gun violence must stop - or they will be serving hefty sentences. That was an approach Boston cops and clergy used this summer to deal with gang members in the Bromley-Heath housing development.
“I’m not surprised,” Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said yesterday about Scotland Yard duplicating the Hub’s crime-fighting strategies. “Those efforts worked before, and they will work again.”
The move came days after the shooting death of 17-year-old Etem Celebi in London. Celebi was the 22nd youth to die in a knife or gun killing in London this year.
“For the top end and the most violent offenders, we have gone literally around the world to see what works,” Metropolitan Police Commander Shaun Sawyer told the BBC yesterday. “From America we are taking some of the ideas, this idea of calling in the most violent offenders. It’s a tactic we want to explore and see if it works in London.”
Gang violence is being blamed for the majority of bloodletting that occurs on Boston city streets. From Jan. 1 to Nov. 12 of this year, 301 people have been hit by bullets on city streets and 75 percent of that gun violence can be blamed on warring gangs, Davis said.
