I wonder if the cops cover both Leicester and Worcester. I know the Worcester Campus needs coverage, and Leicester SHOULD have coverage, but how does it work out?

Just curious.

Posted by: fuzz

The Leicester and Worcester Campuses are both covered by at least one officer 24/7. Usually during the typical busy times there is more than one officer on duty (Thurs, Fri, and Sat nights). Most officers work on both of the campuses.

The college also has satellite properties around the state and a large equestrian property in Paxton, MA.

Now I understand the need to hire, the department seems a bit short handed. Are the officers in radio contact with each other or a dispatcher?

Again, I'm just curious. I like to learn this sort of thing.

Posted by: fuzz

The department has one full time dispatcher. Last I heard the department was putting in for two more full time dispatcher positions. The rest of the time the officers are self dispatched. The department has two main radio frequencies, one frequency for each campus. There is also a couple of additional radio frequencies that are utilized when multiple officers are on duty for big events. Officers can talk to each other from one campus to the other but the quality of the communication is poor; there is an issue with the repeater system. On the Leicester campus officers are in direct contact with Leicester PD via radio that they issued to the campus police department. On the Worcester Campus officers contact WPI Police directly by radio and then there dispatcher relays to Worcester PD.

Not a perfect system, but not a bad one either, all things considered. At least the Officers are not completely out on a limb and can contact someone should the proverbial fecal matter hit the oscillating air circulator. Good to know, thank you oh Wise One-Fuzz. Thank you.

Hows the OT, shift differential, detail if any? Just wondering....

They still accepting apps?

There is plenty of OT, almost as much as you want.

There is no shift differential. Just one flat rate for all patrolman, $14.73hr.

There is a moderate amount of details. Basically at least one detail for just about every college event. Which includes sporting events, various student activities events, student union events and any outside entities using the college's facilities for an event. Obviously the bigger the event the more detail officers assigned. The detail rate is $30hr and then $33hr for outside entities using the college's facilities.

Yes, I do believe the department is still accepting resumes. If I'm not mistaking there is one full time opening and one part time opening.

Gotta ask another question (really, I love this stuff!) how big is the department and what are the opportunities for advancement?

I was in Worcester a couple of years ago while my wife and daughter attended an AMERICAN IDOLS concert. I had fun driving around visiting the various colleges and snapping pictures of the cruisers. Sorry, it's a bizzare fetish of mine. Anyway, I grabbed a picture of a sign at Becker that said the parking space was for Campus Police Vehicles Only. I recall talking to a Becker cop years ago who told me it was a foot beat campus. Has that changed?

I cannot stress enough, I love collecting this type of info. It's just so damn fun to know what my brothers and sisters on other campuses have and have to deal with. Regardless of manpower (generic sense), number of calls, vehicles, and general workload, we're all in the same boat and I just enjoy sharing.

Alot of Worcester Colleges are self-dispatched.

Quinsigamond is self dispatched
Worcester State is also self dispatched
WPI has full-time 24/7 dispatch
UMass Medical School/University Hospital Campus has 24/7 Dispatch

I think Clark has full-time dispatch 24/7
Assumption has full-time Dispatch 24/7 Dispatch
Holy Cross, I'm not sure if they have full-time dispatch

Becker College was disarmed, but seems due to college administrative errors with insurance coverage. I am almost positive they are armed again now.

I didn't know it was possible to stalk a police cruiser.

I'm happy to answer any question brother.

The department is made up of:
1 Chief
1 Lieutenant
2 Sergeants
12 Officers

The opportunities for advancement are slim. The supervisors have been there for years. One Sergeant is about to celebrate his 20th year there.

The Worcester Campus is definitely not a foot beat campus. The campus isn't a closed style campus. The campus is spread out over a few blocks. A couple of the dorms are next to a half way house. One property use to be next to a methadone clinic. In addition to policing the kiddies the department from time to time has to deal with the degenerates of Worcester.

The department recently bought a new crown vic and an explorer with all the bells and whistles.

You would be right the department is armed. They also just participated in active shooter training using Simunitions.

STALKING? I don't think so. Trespassing maybe. Besides, I don't take pictures of unmarked cars, only ones with markings, so I can't be accused of taking nude photos of vehicles.

That was bad, but since I don't give a rat's ass....

Check it out, there are a number of sites with police car photos. You can access one right from this site, but I don't recall where the link is. It's a way of tracing a little history of each department. I've got pictures of Emerson cruisers going back to a Blazer in the mid 80's and a Chevy Malibu that Wentworth used in the early 80s. Many of the pictures were lost when my computer crashed a couple of years ago, but I've still got actual photographs of the older ones.

Thanks for all this info fuzz. I hope the department can expand soon so that there's plenty of coverage and back-up. As I had said in a previous post, the officer I spoke with was there several years ago and at the time, Worcester was a walking assignment according to him, unless my memory is all screwed up.

No problem, anytime. The department, in general, has made progress. The current administration seems receptive to the campus police.
